Abstract
The studies on evaluation of Physico-Chemical properties of selected genotypes of 'Apple Colour' guava was carried out at Department of Horticulture, UAS, GKVK, Bangalore during the year 2006-07 on seven year old plants. Ten seedling progenies of Apple Colour guava were evaluated for yield and quality of fruits. Among these seedling progenies, ACG-8 was out standing with the yield of 19.40 kg/plant (203 fruits per plant or 5.39 t/ha) having fruits of medium sized (95.60 g) with current red colour, attractive shape and good volume (89.86 ml). This selection has 291 seeds per fruit with 3.06 g seed weight and low seed density (1.09). The fruits had a TSS of 15.15 %; moderate to high acidity (0.37% citric acid) and ascorbic acid content of 286.40 mg per 100 g. The total sugars (7.78 %), reducing sugars (4.36 %), non reducing sugars (3.42 %) are moderate in this selection with good sugar acid blend (21.16). The fruits scored highest in the organoleptic characters like peel colour (13.74 score out of 15), pulp colour (12.02 out of 15), pulp flavour (16.52 out of 20) and taste of pulp (25.22 out of 30). Further, since the overall acceptance of the fruit for organoleptic qualities was also highest (83.44 out of 100) this selection could be utilized for commercial cultivation. Correlation studies on different yield contributing characters revealed significant positive association of various yield attributing characters viz., number of fruits per plant, fruit width, fruit weight and fruit volume with fruit yield per plant indicating that selection for fruit yield should indirectly depend on these traits.
