Abstract
The present investigation was undertaken from kharif, 2007 to kharif 2008 at Horticulture Research Farm, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (C.G.) to study the genetic divergence, type of gene action involved for green pod yield and its components, to ascertain the magnitude of heterosis and inbreeding depression, to determine the extent of variability, heritability and genetic advance for various quantitative characters, to estimate the general combining ability and specific combining ability of parents and crosses, respectively and finally to study the association of green pod yield and its contributing traits in segregating generation (Fz). The experimental material comprised of sixty genotypes of cowpea including seven improved varieties to estimate genetic divergence during kharif 2007. D' values recorded for different characters for varying treatments indicated the presence of appreciable genetic diversity among the genotypes and also revealed that geographic distribution had no relation to genetic diversity as genotypes belonged to different places of origin and grouped under same cluster. On the basis of divergence analysis six genotypes have been selected as divers lines forL x T analysis. Combining ability studies by using Line x Tester analysis which consists of six lines and four testers viz., ICP-26, ICP-38, ICP-42, ICP-45, ICP-49, ICP-54 and Pusa Komal, Arka Garima, Indira Hari and Khalleshwari respectively for green pod yield & its components, revealed that the involvement of both additive and non-additive gene action. By using best general combiner namely ICP-38 have been identified for earliness and short duration, ICP-42 and ICP-54 for higher green pod yield whereas, Indira Hari, Pusa Komal, and Arka Garima will be used as broad base tester for green pod yield and its component for cowpea improvement programme. Relative heterosis, heterobeltiosis and standard heterosis were estimated for green pod yield and its components were found high to moderate degree of heterosis for most of the characters studied. High per se performance, remarkable heterosis and significant sca was expressed by ICP-42/ Arka Garima, ICP-42/ Indira Harj, ICP-541 Arka Garima, and ~Cp-54/P uss Komal with higher yield in F2 generation revealed that these crosses 257 may be useful to enhance the frequency of transgressive segeregants and providing better chance for selection of desirable cowpea genotypes. The association analysis and variability studies revcalcd thal pod Ienpth, pod weight . number of pods per plant, numher of seeds per plant, fruiting duration. IN sccd weight . number of pickings and grecn pod yield per plant should bc considered, while making sclcction strategies for the irnprovelncnt of green pot1 yield and its conlponcntc
