Abstract
Livestock play an important role in the socio- economic life of India.
Diversification of agricultural production with emphasis on livestock is considered as
one of the most effective pathways to enhance agricultural growth and reduce poverty.
The data used for the study are entirely based on secondary source period of 15 years
(1996- 97 to 2010- 2011). Major exportable animal products, buffalo meat, animal
casings, dairy product, sheep and goat meat and poultry meat have been selected for
the study. The trend analysis of export of animal products suggests that all products
selected for the study showed an increasing trend. Indian animal products are highly
protected in the international market as depicted by Nominal Protection Coefficient.
Malaysia, Lebanon and Jordan markets were found to be highly co-integrated with
respect to buffalo meat pricing, while Germany, South Africa and Lebanon markets
were highly price integrated with respect to animal casings. Singapore, Bangladesh
and Pakistan were co-integrated on one hand; Philippines and Egypt were cointegrated
on the other while Philippines, Pakistan and UAE were co-integrated in the
third plain with respect to importing of dairy products from India. In case of sheep
and goat meat trade, Seychelles and UAE were found to be co-integrated, Oman and
Seychelles were also found to have co-integration, Saudi Arabia and Seychelles also
were found to have co-integrated. In case of poultry meat trade, Pakistan and Angola;
Denmark and Germany; Japan, Germany and Thailand markets were found to have
co-integration.
