Abstract
Garlic (Allium sativum.) is one of the important bulb crops, used as a spice or
condiment throughout India.The planting material for garlic cultivation is garlic cloves.
The garlic cloves are separated from the whole bulb by beating with a wooden stick. This
conventional method is very laborious and time consuming. To address this problem, a
motorized garlic bulb breaker was developed and evaluated for its performance. The bulb
breaking unit consisted of i) feed hopper, ii) bulb breaking unit (two stages of rollers),
iii) blower, iv) outlets, v) main frame and vi) power transmission system. The breaker
was evaluated at three levels of rubber padding material viz., plain, button and corrugated
types, four levels of clearance between the rubber rollers viz., 15, 18, 21 and 24 mm,
three levels of lower speeds viz., 25.92, 34.56, 43.2 m/min and three levels of higher
speeds viz., 259.2, 302.4, 345.6 m/min. The motorized garlic bulb breaker with
corrugated type padding material had the highest breaking efficiency, breaking capacity,
germination at 18–21 mm clearance were 75 per cent, 404.56 kg/h, 100 per cent and 94.3
per cent, 782.18 kg/h, 100 per cent at a peripheral speed of 43.2 m/min for planting
purpose and at a peripheral speed of 302.4 m/min for processing purpose respectively.
The cost of developed breaker was .56, 000. Cost of breaking was .0.06/kg of garlic.
The cost saved by machine over manual bulb breaking for planting purpose and for
processing purpose was 90 and 96 per cent respectively.
