Abstract
The present investigation on “Genetic analysis of yield and yield components in white seeded sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)” was undertaken with six lines (GM-NIC-8181, GM-NIC-8261, GM-NIC-16332, GM-NIC-8227, GM-NIC-16182 and GM-IS-349-1) and testers (Swetha Thil, RT-125, SVPR-1 and JCS-402). During kharif, 2005 these parents were crossed in Line x Tester design at College Farm, College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad and 24 crosses were affected. Further, parents (Lines and testers) and F1 hybrids were raised during summer, 2006 with three replications and data was analysed and evaluated for variability, heritability, genetic advance, heterosis and combining ability and they were studied for seed yield and yield components. The studies of genetic variability revealed moderate phenotypic, genotypic, coefficients of variation, high heritability and genetic advance for number of effective primaries/plant and number of effective capsules/plant indicating that simple selection can be practiced for improving these characters. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the genotypes for all the traits studied. Further, the hybrids in general were high yielding, compared to parents, high level of heterosis was noticed for number of effective primaries per plant followed by number of effective capsules per plant and seed yield. Heterosis for oil content was low to medium. Non-additive gene action was found to be preponderant for seed yield, yield component traits in the present investigation, favouring hybrid breeding programmes. Study of mean performance, heterosis and sca effects revealed the superiority of the hybrids, GM-NIC-8181 x SVPR-1, GM-NIC-8181 x RT-125, GM-NIC-16182 x RT-125 and GM-NIC-8261 x SVPR-1 for seed yield per plant, while the hybrids, GM-NIC-8261 x JCS-402, GM-NIC-16182 x RT-125 and GM-IS-349-1 x RT-125 were showed superiority for oil content and cross, GM-NIC-16182 x RT-125 and GM-NIC-16332 x Swetha Thil recorded high seed yield coupled with high oil content. These heterotic hybrids may be exploited for further utilization in transgressive and heterosis breeding programmes. High seed yield coupled with high oil content hybrid combinations were found more desirable.
