Abstract
The investigation on the effect. of NPV on all tbe
ins tars of Soodontera lltura (Fabrlclusl.. its effect on
third-instar larvae on three different. host. plants and also with
four organic acids, and its influence on non-host. insects of
Lepidopetera was carried out in the laboratory. Department of
Ent.omotology. during the year 1990-91. A :field experiment was
also carried out to evaluate the efficacy of virus along w:Lth
insecticides in the control of the same insect.
A positive correlation was noticed between the larval
mortalities and viral concentrations. LC50 values increased with
the age of the larvae. The pupal mortality and malformed adult
emergence was also positivelY correlated with the viral
concentration, whereas, the rate of pupation, incubation period
and normal adult emergence were negativezy correlated. Higher
mortalities were observed on tobacco followed by castor and
groundnut at all the viral concentrations. Similarly BoricĀ· acid
in combination with virus proved to be superior in reducing the
larval population when compared to other acids tested. The
Soodoptera NPV was not cross-infective to other eight
lepidopterous insects including mulberry s:il.kworm. So, NPV was
wdque in its host specificity and can be used in the host crops
surrounded by mulberry fields.
The virus comtdnations with sub-lethal dose of
the best in controll.ing the
500 LK ha-t fenvalerate 0.005%
insecticides were found to be
.Q.litura. The treatment of NPV
was found to be effective and economical for the control of
.a.Utura on castor.
