Abstract
Coconut development did not focus on specific gaps in coconut
cultivation. Hence, there is a need for application of ‘malady-remedy analysis’
for improvement in coconut cultivation. Therefore, the present study was under
taken with the specific objectives of analyzing maladies and to unearth the
remedies in coconut cultivation.
Diagnostic research design was followed. Five mandals in East
Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh were selected randomly for drawing the
120 sample of the study. From each mandal one village was selected randomly.
The data was collected by personal interview with the help of structured
interview schedule. Appropriate statistical procedures were employed and the
data was analyzed and interpreted.
The major malady dimensions kept in 1-9 ranks by the farmers were
marketing, social, crop production, technological, situational, storage and
processing, cultural, stimulational and psychological dimensions. Under each
dimension different maladies were identified and given ranks for both malady
and remedy angles.
In crop production the identified maladies were pests, button drop,
diseases, intercultivaiton, organic farming, fertilizer dose, spacing and the
remedies were: IPM, organic farming, visual proof, disease knowledge,
intercultivaiton, non-cash input and testing fertilizer dose. In technological
dimension: skill in handling, complicatedness, technology costly and no use,
knowledge of technology were the identified maladies and remedies were more
practical session, farmer education, plan the new practices, field trips and brain
storming. In marketing: MSP, market information and less and costly transport
facilities were the isolated maladies and Government institution, fix MSP,
market information, license system, market points and transports were the
selected remedies.
No processing industries and less storage facilities were pinpointed
maladies in storage and processing dimension, and the remedies were to
construct storage godowns and boost processing industries. Cultural dimension
maladies were interest in use of old seed, perception that coconut cultivation is
the best, cyclone-Gods will and remedies were: confidence building, utilization
of information source, bringing attitudinal changes. No group action and
cooperation, progressive farmers identification, no friendly relationship of
A.E.O’s, importance to family decision were the distinguished social dimension
maladies, and remedies were create awareness, encourage teams, use technology,
use trained persons, reduce pressure, conduct training. In psychological dimension
registered maladies were no benefit from Government, less available time to
practice, lack of knowledge in processing, no incentives, demonstrations,
commercial crop, language compatibility and economical rewards, conduct
campaign, exhibition, field trips, provide incentives, scheduling demonstration,
removal of unfavorable psychological feelings were the raised remedies.
Then, the stimulational dimension maladies include lack of motivation, no
interest in new varieties, low respect to coconut farmer were recognized and
develop professionalism, confidence and providing remunerative prices were the
obtained remedies. Finally, the interfered maladies in situational dimension were:
timely control measures, knowledge about drudgery instruments,
timely harvesting, socio-economic conditions, competition with other farmers,
friends’ influence, worshipping God and the remedy ranks given to prepare
agricultural staff, drudgery reduction instruments, schedule for harvesting and
marketing, brought competitive spirit , machinery introduction, left the personal
beliefs .
The findings of the study were expected to help the planners, extension
administrators, scientists and coconut farmers to take strategic decisions to over
come the maladies in coconut cultivation. It was also expressed to add to the
existing body of scientific knowledge, in the dimension of malady analysis for
coconut development. Finally over a figurative strategy depicting paradigm of 8
dimensions, so as to derive satisfaction of the coconut farmer and for the
coconut crop development in East Godavari district.
