Abstract
Mechanical ventilators employed in veterinary practice routinely utilize oxygen as the driving gas for mechanical ventilation from a common oxygen source. Mechanical ventilation is mandatory when a neuromuscular blocking agent such as rocuronium is used in the anaesthetic protocol. The "E" type oxygen cylinders when used as a source of driving gas for mechanical ventilation may deplete very rapidly leading to hypoxia posing threat to patient safety and hence availability of alternate oxygen source is necessary (Szpisjak et al., 2005; Taenzer et al., 2002). In this context it is important to estimate the driving gas requirement to accomplish mechanical ventilation for the intended duration as well to ensure oxygen availability to the patient when a common oxygen source is employed.
