Abstract
Agriculture plays a dominant role in the Indian economy in terms of sustainable land management, food security, value addition, employment and export earnings (Hortex Foundation 2013). India is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetable countries in the world after China, which is 141.2 million metric tonnes. Agriculture is the single largest land resource exploring sector. Lemon is an important medicinal plant of the family Rutaceae. Lemon is one of the leading fruit crops of India being an income source and source of foreign exchange earnings. It is cultivated mainly for its alkaloids, which are having anticancer activities and antibacterial potential in crude extracts of different parts (viz., leaves, stem, root and flower) (Kawaii et al. 2000). India, Mexico, China, Argentina, Brazil and Turkey are the world’s principal lemon-producing countries and were together responsible for 60 per cent of global production in 2019–2020 (FAO 2020). India is the largest producer of lime citrus is the third most important fruit crop in India with an estimated total coverage of 1 million hectares. Acid lime (C. aurantiifolia) is the main cultivar produced in India, accounting for almost 20 per cent of total citrus production (Ghosh et al. 2013). In tropical countries where refrigeration in transport and storage is a constraint, acid lime (C. aurantiifolia) may be preferred due to its longer non-refrigerated shelf life (Spreen 2000).
