Abstract
An experiment entitled “Studies on macropropagation of banana cv. Nanjangud Rasabale (AAB) was carried out at College of Horticulture, Mysuru, during the year 2019-2020. The study was conducted to determine the effect of plant growth chemicals, biogents and growth media on production of macropropagated plantlets and to assess the cost effectiveness of the technology. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Among the various growth chemicals and bioagents studied, the treatment combination of BAP 40ppm + P. fluorescens (T13) produced early primary bud emergence (25 days), BAP 40ppm + T. asperellum (T12) performed well in early secondary decapitation (15.72 days), secondary bud emergence (57.89 days), maximum plantlet height (25.42 cm), number of leaves (5.44) and B:C ratio (2.45). The highest shoot fresh weight (108.33 g) and dry weight (9.40 g) was obtained highest in combination of BAP 40ppm + AMF. Treatment with IBA 0.25% exhibited the best results in terms of root parameters. The maximum plantlet regeneration (primary and secondary plantlets) per corm was recorded in T14 (4.44 and 12.56 respectively). Growth media influence showed that, the FYM + Cocopeat (T6) recorded the shortest time for primary bud emergence, secondary decapitation, secondary bud emergence (24.2, 22.2, 62.93 days respectively), maximum plantlet height (29.58 cm), number of leaves (4.89) and number of roots (10.89) production. Considering the maximum primary buds per corm (4.2), secondary plantlets per corm (11), shoot fresh and dry weight (87 g and 6.77 g respectively) and B:C ratio (2.68), the treatment combination of Sawdust + FYM + Cocopeat (T7) was considered as the best media for macropropagation. On an average, per plantlet cost of production using growth chemicals and bioagents, and growth media were found to be Rs. 7.84 and Rs. 6.58 respectively; representing the macropropagation technology is economical for adoption, even by those with limited access to resources and can able to produce acceptable number of quality plantlets in a shorter time period.
