Abstract
An experiment entitled “Studies on zeolite-LDPE composite bags to extend shelf life of grapes” was carried out at the Department of Post Harvest Technology, College of Horticulture, Bagalkote, Karnataka during the year 2019-20. The objective was to find the effective packaging material for increasing the shelf life of table grapes. In this experiment, thirteen packaging treatments viz., control polybag (T1), control polybag + CFB (T2), zeolite-polybag (T3), zeolite-polybag + CFB (T4), zeolitesilver-polybag (T5), zeolite-silver-polybag + CFB (T6), zeolite-chlorine-polybag (T7), zeolite-chlorine-polybag + CFB (T8), zeolite biodegradable bag (T9), zeolite biodegradable bag + CFB (T10), CFB (T11), CFB + grape guard (T12) and punnet box (T13) were used to study their effectiveness in prolonging shelf life of table grapes cv. Thompson Seedless both under ambient (32±1˚C) and refrigerated (5±1˚C) conditions. Under ambient storage, grape bunches packed in T8 (zeolite-chlorine- polybag + CFB) recorded minimum physiological loss in weight (8.92 %), berry drop (1.36 %), TSS (16.08 ºB), tiratable acidity (0.72 %), TSS to acid ratio (21.94), maximum berry firmness value (91.05 N), highest sensory score for colour and appearance (7.86), texture (7.90), taste (7.91), flavour (7.94), overall acceptability (7.90), freshness of rachis (6.61) ease of detachment of berry (2.42) and minimum disease score (0.31) at 8 DAS. In refrigerated storage at 5±1ºC and 85-90 % RH), grape bunches packed in T8 (zeolite-chlorine-polybag + CFB) showed minimum physiological loss in weight (2.25 %), berry drop (1.08 %), TSS (15.58 ºB), tiratable acidity (0.60 %), maximum berry firmness value (84.01 N), highest sensory score for colour and appearance (8.31), texture (8.06), taste (8.00), flavour (8.03), overall acceptability (8.06), freshness of rachis (8.39), ease of detachment of berry (2.72) and minimum disease score (0.17) at 40 DAS. In conclusion, grape bunches packed in zeolite-chlorine-polybag, zeolite-silverpolybag and zeolite-biodegradable bags kept in CFB were found to be superior in maintaining the overall physico-chemical and sensory qualities of table grapes. These packages were capable of extending the shelf-life of grapes by additional 2 days in ambient storage and 15 days in refrigerated storage when compared to CFB both under ambient condition (2 days shelf life) and under refrigerated condition (15 days shelf life) respectively.
