Abstract
A field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2020-21 in the
department of PMA, College of Horticulture, Bagalkot (UHS, Bagalkot), with objective
to evaluate different spacing and fertilizer levels on growth, yield and quality of chia
(Salvia hispanica L.) under northern dry zone of Karnataka. The experiment was carried
out with three different spacings (S1-45 cm × 30 cm, S2-60 cm × 15 cm and S3-60 cm ×
30 cm) and three levels of fertilizers (F1-40:20:20 N: P2O5:K2O, kg ha-1
+ 5t FYM ha-1
,
F2-60:40:40 N: P2O5:K2O, kg ha-1
+10t FYM ha-1
and F3 -80:60:60 N: P2O5:K2O, kg ha-1
+ 15t FYM ha-1
). The experimental design adopted was split plot with three replications.
The results of the study showed more number of branches per plant (14.05), chlorophyll
content ( 16.36), leaf area per plant (1051.71 cm2
), seed yield per plant (17.45 g), seed
yield per hectare (1097 kg ha-1
), stover yield (7507 kg ha-1
) and crude protein (21.41%)
in wider spacing 60 cm × 30 cm compared to other levels of spacing. Among the
different levels of fertilizers more number of branches per plant (15.23), chlorophyll
content (15.63), leaf area per plant (1032.08 cm2
), seed yield per plant (13.89 g), seed
yield per hectare (1097 kg ha-1
), stover yield (5292 kg ha-1
) and crude protein (20.21%)
were observed in F3 compared to other levels of fertilizers. However fixed oil per cent
was more in S3 (60 cm × 30 cm) spacing (26.84%) and F1 fertilizer levels (22.13%).
Among the different levels of spacing S3 spacing recorded significantly higher total
uptake of nutrient (76.91, 10.30 and 32.21 NPK kg ha-1
respectively) than compared to
other levels. Similarly F3 fertilizer application recorded significantly higher total uptake
of nutrient (72.66, 9.45 and 32.76 NPK kg ha-1
respectively) compared to other levels of
fertilizers. A spacing of 60 cm × 30 cm and fertilizer level of 80:60:60 N: P2O5:K2O, kg
ha-1
+ 15t FYM ha-1
gave significantly higher seed yield.
