Abstract
An experiment entitled “Evaluation of rose (Rosa hybrida L.) varieties for growth, yield and quality under eastern dry zone of Karnataka’’ was carried out during October 2017 to March 2018 in the Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, College of Horticulture, Bengaluru in randomized block design replicated twice. Twenty five Hybrid Tea rose varieties were evaluated for growth, quality and yield parameters under open field condition. Significant variations were observed among twenty five varieties for growth, flowering and yield characters. Among the varieties, maximum plant height (118.50 cm) was recorded in var. Clarie Chazal, whereas var. Cherry Parfait recorded maximum plant spread (34.25 cm) in N-S direction, and var. Auguste Renoir recorded maximum plant spread (36.50 cm) in E-W direction. The maximum number of branches per plant (4.00) were recorded in var. Cherry Parfait. The maximum stem girth, chlorophyll content and individual leaf area were recorded in var. Clarie Chazal (10.60 mm, 58.90 and 25.07 cm2, respectively). Among the varieties, var. Chantre took least number of days for bud initiation, flowering and days from bud initiation to full bloom stage (36.00, 13.20 and 15.00 days, respectively). Maximum number of cut flowers per plant and per m2 (20.00 and 83.00, respectively) were recorded in var. Cherry Parfait. Flower yield on weight basis was maximum in var. Moonstone (243.43 g/plant and 900.30 g/m2, respectively). Maximum flower bud diameter and flower diameter (2.59 cm and 9.40 cm, respectively) was recorded in var. Acapella. Maximum number of petals per flower (71.20) were recorded in var. Tata Centenary. Maximum stalk length (55.40 cm) was obtained in var. Clarie Chazal. Among the varieties, the maximum stalk girth and vase life (5.60 mm and 11.50 days, respectively) were recorded in var. Eterna.
