Production and Marketing of Indigenous Cow and Buffalo Milk in Dharwad District of Karnataka – an Economic Analysis

Abstract
Agriculture is the principal source of employment and income in rural areas of India. In addition to agriculture the livestock sector is an another important activity of the rural population in India. India is the largest producer of milk in the world with a production of 146.3 million tonne milk during 2014-15. In India Indigenous cattle play a vital role in livelihood security of our country. The local breeds of cattle are well known for their draft efficiency and heat tolerance. The multistage random sampling technique was followed for getting the sample size of 150 respondents rearing indigenous cow and buffalo. Growth in milk production in Dharwad district was 4.5 per cent; it was positive and significant at five per cent probability level. The total cost of milk production was about 20,789 for indigenous cows and was about 29,090 for buffaloes. The net returns realised by indigenous cow milk producers was about 6,528 and for buffalo milk producers it was about 15,391. The benefit cost ratio for production of indigenous cow milk was 1.31 and 1.52 for production of buffalo milk. In case of indigenous cow all the resources except minerals and veterinary services were over utilized. But in case of buffalo all the resources except concentrates and minerals-veterinary services were over utilized. There were three marketing channels found in indigenous cow milk marketing, while four marketing channels found in marketing of buffalo milk. Low milk productivity, inadequate availability of fodder and grazing facilities and infertility problem were the major production constraints faced by the respondents. Low price for milk, Inability to market value added products and less knowledge about marketing strategies were the major constraints faced in marketing of milk.
