Abstract
Oilseeds occupy an important position in the agricultural economy of India. The present study was undertaken with objectives to assess the growth and stability in supply of and demand for oilseeds in Karnataka and to estimate projected supply of and demand for major oilseeds the next five years. The time series data from 1995-96 to 2012-13 years on production of oilseeds in Karnataka, population and per capita income were collected from the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Bangalore. The statistical data on consumer expenditure collected by the National Sample Survey Organisation of India (NSSO) was used. The growth and stability in supply of and demand for oilseeds were analysed by using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) technique and Cubby-Della Valle Index respectively. The supply in oilseeds was projected by considering base year supply and supply growth and the demand for oilseeds was projected by considering base year demand, income growth, population growth and expenditure elasticities for the years 2015-16 to 2019-20. There was a declining growth in supply of total oilseeds (-2.58 %) with high instability (19.40 %) during the study period. Whereas, the demand for total oilseeds increased at a rate of 4.94 per cent with low instability of 0.94 per cent in Karnataka. The projected supply of and demand for edible oilseeds would be 8.11 lakh tonnes and 24.01 lakh tonnes respectively by 2020 with a supply-demand gap of 15.89 lakh tonnes indicating that the supply of oilseeds would be far below the requirements. Hence, there is a need for strengthening efforts to enhance production of oilseeds by increasing their productivity through a combination of land-saving technologies and efficient crop management strategies.
