Abstract
The present investigations on the “Effect of dormancy breaking substances on bud break and cropping behaviour of low chilling peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch)” were carried out in the experimental farm of Department of Fruit Science. The studies were conducted on two year old peach plants of cultivars Glohaven and Royal Paradelux planted at a spacing of 2m × 2m. In the first experiment, chemical treatments were applied to induce early leaf fall and dormancy in the plants so as to obtain early and uniform flowering. Six treatments viz., T1- urea @ 4%, T2- CuSO4 @ 10%, T3- ZnSO4 @ 1.5%, T4- ZnSO4 @ 3%, T5- urea @ 2% + CuSO4 @ 5% + ZnSO4 @ 2% and T6- control were applied in the first week of November. In the second experiment, dormancy breaking chemicals comprised of different treatments namely; T1- dormex @ 3%, T2- thidiazuron @ 250 ppm, T3- thiourea @ 5%, T4- thiourea @ 2.5%, T5- KNO3 @ 1.5%, T6- GA3 @ 100 ppm, T7- GA3 @ 200 ppm, T8- garlic extract @ 10%, T9- garlic extract @ 15% and T12- control were applied twice on 24th December and 1st January whereas, summer pruning i.e. T10 and T11 was performed on 20th July. The vegetative parameters, flowering and fruiting parameters and biochemical parameters were observed in all the treated plants and were compared to untreated control. The result of the study revealed that in first experiment, the earliest leaf fall in Glohaven was induced by application of urea @ 2% + CuSO4 @ 5% + ZnSO4 @ 2% and in Royal Paradelux, it was noted with treatment ZnSO4 @ 3%. Among all treatments, treatment T4 i.e. ZnSO4 @ 3% was proved to be the best for advancement of bud break, full bloom and improvement of physical and biochemical parameters while urea @ 4% was best for enhancement vegetative growth. In the second experiment, the bud break, full bloom, yield, fruit set, retention, length, diameter, weight, TSS, acidity, ascorbic acid and sugar content were found best with treatment dormex @ 3%.
