Abstract
A total of 297 sheep were genotyped for polymorphism in the IGF-I gene in Mecheri and Madras Red sheep breeds. In the PCR reaction the primers used were 5’ ATTACAGCTGCCTGCCCCTT 3’ and 5’ CACATCTGCTTACACCTTACCCG 3’. A 265 bp long IGF1 (exon1) gene PCR product was genotyped for polymorphic pattern using SSCP method. The PCR-SSCP analysis of exon1 IGF-I revealed three distinct patterns viz., AA, AG and GG. The frequencies were 269 for pattern AA, 20 for pattern AG and 8 for pattern GG. The effects of genotype on the birth weight and weight gain at one month, two months, three months, six months, nine months and twelve months of age for IGF1 - SSCP genotypes were analyzed. A significant effect (P<0.05) of genotypes on weight gain was recorded only at twelve months of age in this study. The twelve months weight gain of AA genotype (16.43 ± 0.56 kg) was significantly higher than that of AG and GG genotypes (14.81 ± 1.14 kg and 13.80 ± 1.82 kg).
