Abstract
An experiment entitled “Effect of Priming on growth and yield of French
bean.(Phaseolus vulgaris L.)” was conducted during Rabi 2018-19 in the Vegetable
Research field of Department of Vegetable Science, College of Agriculture, OUAT,
Bhubaneswar. The trial was conducted in Randomized Block Design with three
replications and ten treatments. The treatments were T1 (Hydro priming), T2 (GA3 50
ppm),T3 (KCl 2%),T4 (Sodium Molybdate 500 ppm) ,T5 (Vitavax 2g/kg) , T6
(Pseudomona fluorescens 10%), T7 (Trichoderma viride 10%), T8 (GA3 50 ppm+
T.viride 10%), T9 (Sodium Molybdate 500 ppm +Pseudomonas fluorescens 10%),
T10 (Control) Good quality seeds of French bean variety Harsha was taken and
different priming treatments were done in the laboratory followed by growing the
crop in the field as per recommended package of practices. Observations on twenty
two characters were taken during the experiment. It was observed that the plant height
at harvest was the highest (45.91 cm) in T3 followed by 43.23 cm in T8, the number of
pods per plant was highest in T3 (32.40) and T2 (30.40) compared to control (20.2).
length of pod was highest with T8 (13.80 cm) followed by T2 (13.70 cm), fresh
weight of one pod was highest in T3 (6.5g) followed by 6.2 g in T7, number of seeds
per pod was highest in T3 (5.44) followed by T8 & T2 (5.2) and pod yield per plot was
highest in T3 (11.96 kg) followed by T8 (10.98 kg). However the pod yield per hectare
was highest in T3 (13.28 t/ha) followed by 12.19 t/ha in T8 and 11.86 t/ha in T2 and
the lowest pod yield of 8.10 t/ha was obtained in unprimed control. However days to
1st flowering & 50% flowering were found non significant. Priming with (GA3 50
ppm + T.viride10%) was found the best in reducing leaf anthracnose and root rot by
62.9% and 75.9% respectively .Vitavax 2g/kg was the next best priming treatment
which reduces anthracnose and root rot by 53.2% and 63.8% respectively. The seed
quality parameters as studied in laboratory revealed the highest germination of 84.2%,
seedling length of 43.00 cm, Vigour Index –Ι of 3620.6 and Vigour Index –ΙΙ of
72.41 in KCl 2%. From the present experiment it can be concluded that if (KCl
2%) is used for priming of French bean seeds it produces better yield attributing
character & also record better yield of 13.28 t/ha followed by 12.19t/ha with
(GA3 50 ppm+ T.viride 10%
