Megaesophagus in Dogs – A Case Study

Abstract
Nine dogs presented with signs of chronic regurgitation and weight loss were subjected to clinical, laboratory and imaging diagnostic techniques. Survey radiographs and barium contrast radiography con rmed esophageal diverticulum associated with megaesophagus in one, constriction of lower esophageal sphincter in three dogs and diffused dilatation of cervical esophagus in another  ve dogs. Of which, congenital megaesophagus was recorded in a  ve month old non descriptive pup. Three out of nine were died within three weeks of presentation, where two dogs had out ow obstruction due to complete closure of lower oesophageal sphincter and one dog with concurrent renal failure. Rest of the dogs was advised medical therapy with pyridostigmine and elevated feeding.
