Abstract
Goats contribute significantly to the Indian economy by sustaining livelihood and supplementing the income of small farmers and rural population. Goats are natural reservoir of Brucella melitensis. Brucellosis is one of the worldwide zoonotic disease and transmitted by direct or indirect contact with infected animals or their products. Brucellosis is also known as “undulant fever”, “Mediterranean fever” or “Malta fever”, it is an occupationally acquired debilitating disease in humans and they get infection after direct or indirect contact with infected animals or by consumption of animal by products. This study was aimed to evaluate the prevalence of brucellosis in goats in Jaipur. A total of 300 serum samples were collected from different locations of Jaipur region from goats and were tested by RBPT, STAT and iELISA. Overall sero-prevalence of 1per cent was recorded in goats. Test wise sero-prevalence was recorded as 1.33, 2.33 and 3.33 per cent by RBPT, STAT and i- ELISA, respectively. Higher prevalence (2.5%, 2.5% and 5%) in above 6 yr age group of goats were obtained by RBPT, STAT and i-ELISA, respectively. Females had higher prevalence rates (1.6%, 2.4% and 3.6%) than males. Taking i-ELISA as standard, sensitivity was in the order of STAT > RBPT and both the tests recorded high specificity values. Among the three serological tests i-ELISA was found to be most sensitive test as it detected maximum number of Brucella positive serum samples in goats.
