Abstract
The present investigation was undertaken in the Department of Animal Reproduction,
Gynaecology and Obstetrics, C.V.Sc. & A.H., OUAT, Bhubaneswar Thirty six repeat breeder
cows were selected from the cases presented at outdoor of T.V.C.C. and animals covered
under door step AI in and around Bhubaneswar city. The repeat breeding animals showing
negative reaction to the white side test were selected for this study. Besides supplementation
of mineral mixture, the experimental animals were treated with single dose of 1500 IU of
hCG at the time of AI (Gr II), single dose of 10 μg of GnRH at the time of AI (Gr III), double
dose of 1500 IU of hCG i.e. at the time of AI and 2nd dose after 10 days (Gr IV),
double dose of 10 μg of GnRH i.e. at the time of AI and 2nd dose after 10 days (Gr V)
and 5IU of Oxytocin at the time of AI (Gr VI). The selected cows were bred artificially
by inseminating with frozen thawed semen from proven bulls. Blood samples were collected
on day of estrus (0 hr) and on the day of subsequent estrus if the animal came to estrus or on
21st day of AI if it did not come to estrus. Collected samples were analysed for various
haematological parameters such as haemoglobin, total erythrocyte count (TEC), packed cell
volume (PCV), total leococyte count (TLC) and differential leucocyte count (DC). Serum
samples were collected for estimations of hormonal parameters like estrogen and
progesterone. The overall incidence of repeat breeding was found to be 40.90 per cent during
the study period. The most prominent estrous behaviours observed in these cows were
standing stance, excitement, tail raising, bellowing, licking, vulval edema, hyperemia,
cervical mucus discharge and restlessness. The mean estrus duration in repeat breeding cows
was found to be 28.47± 6.48 hrs with a range extending between 12 hrs to 36 hrs. There was
significant increase in haemoglobin, total erythrocyte count, packed cell volume after
completion of therapeutic protocols in all the treatment groups. A significant increase
(p<0.01) in progesterone and decrease in estrogen concentration was observed in repeat
breeder cows treated with double dose hCG or GnRH at 10 days interval. Highest conception
rate of 83.33 per cent was observed in in repeat breeder cows treated with double dose hCG at
10 days interval. Hence it can be concluded that double dose hCG once at AI and another
after 10 days AI can be used efficiently as a therapeutic strategy in cows with repeat breeding
which can improve the conception rate of the animals. This can eliminate repeat breeding
problems which are of noninfectious origin within one estrus cycle there by reducing the
calving interval resulting in upliftment of the socio-economic condition of the farmers. Other
therapeutic protocols like double dose GnRH once at AI and another after 10 days AI can also
be used for mitigation of repeat breeding problems in herds.
