Abstract
The poor postpartum resumption of estrous in dairy herds has become a major
problem, resulting a substantial economic loss. Keeping this in mind, the present study was
conducted to evaluate the effects of mineral mixture alone, in combination with double synch,
estra double synch and progesterone protocols on induction of ovulatory estrous in
postpartum anestrous dairy cows. Fifty anestrous cross bred cows with no abnormalities were
randomly allocated into five groups (n=10 for each group). Group I animals were not given
any treatment and served as control, Group II animals were treated with mineral mixture and
Group III, IV and V were given double synch, estra double synch and progesterone protocol,
respectively in addition to mineral mixture. Blood samples were collected and analysed for
various haematological, biochemical and hormonal parameters at day 0 and day 13 following
artificial insemination. The incidence of postpartum anestrous among the breedable crossbred
cows was found to be 34.54 per cent. An increased level of serum total protein for the treated
groups was observed on 13th day of artificial insemination. In the post treatment period the
albumin value was elevated in the treated groups but no significant difference could be
observed between and within the groups. Serum cobalt value revealed highly significant
difference (P<0.01) between all the groups except the control. A significant difference
between the pre and post treatment values for serum estrogen was also recorded in Group I, II
and V. However a significantly higher (P<0.05) estrogen concentration was recorded in the
post treatment samples for the animals treated with Double Synch and Estra double synch
protocol. The highest estrous response (100%) was achieved in Group V cows where Proluton
depot along with estradiol and PGF2α were administered. Nine out of ten cows (90%) from
Group III and Group IV exhibited estrous following double synch and estra double synch
protocol respectively with a highest pregnancy rate. Following mineral mixture
supplementation, four out of ten cows (40%) were exhibited estrous and two out of ten cows
(20%) were pregnant. Exhibition estrous in various treatment groups suggested that
progesterone combination (Group V) and double synch and estra double synch faired most
favourably for induction of estrous response.
