Abstract

Academicstressisanewcategoryofstressthatisatpresentgaining importanceasthisaffectsthestudentsacademicachievementandtheiradjustment inthesociety especiallyduringthelateadolescenceperiod. Thecausesand sourcesoftheiracademicstressmaybeduetovariousfactors. Thepresentstudy wasformulatedwiththemainobjectivesofstudyingthecausesofacademicstress among EAMCET students appearingformedical and engineeringentrance examinationcomparingthecausesofacademicstressamongboysandgirlsand betweenthestudentsappearingformedicalandengineeringentranceexamination andfindingoutthecopingstrategiesadoptedbythestudents. Exploratoryresearchdesignwasadoptedforthepresentstudy. Two coachingcentresnamelyRathnamandNarayanacoachingcentreswereselected fromNe]lore,Nelloredistrictforthestudy.Thesamplecomprisedof200students, 50boysand50girlsappearingformedicalentranceexaminationand50boysand 50girlsappearingforengineeringentranceexamination,weretakenbyrandom _ samplingmethod. Datawascalculatedbyusingpercentages,z-testandchi-square test. Thestudyrevealedthatgirlswerefoundtohavemoreacademicstressthanboysappearingformedicalentranceexamination. Personallife,coaching environmentandmodelexaminationsweretheareaswhichcausedhighstressto girlsthanboys. Thegirlsappearingformedicalentranceexaminationexperienced highstressduetocauseswhichincludetoomuchofhouseholdworlgmoretest anxiety,fearofsuccess,fearofcareersalience,toomanyexamsinashortspan oftimeandfavouritismofteacherstowardssomestudents. Studentsappearingfor engineeringentranceexaminationfeltlowstress. Amongthose,girlsexperienced highstressonlyintheareaofpre-examinationthanboys. Themajorreasonsfor this difference in causes were the students appearingformedical entrance examinationareappearingforsecondtimeandtheyexperiencedmorestressthan theircounterpartswhoexperiencedlessstressbecauseastheyhavejustcompleted theirseniorIntermediateexaminationsandappearingforthe firsttime,these studentshadlackoftimeforthepreparationforEAMCETexamination. The studyalsorevealedthattherewasnosignificantdifferencebetweenstudents appearingformedicalandengineeringentranceexamination thereasonsforthis werenow-a--daystheyhavemoreoptionsofJOlmllginothercourseslikeBachelor ofComputerApplications BachelorofBusinessAdministrationHotelManagementandsoon. So,theyhadexperiencedstressatalowlevel. Majorityoftheboyscouldovercomefromtheacademicstressbyadoptingproblemsolvingcopingstrategieslikeimaginingsuccessanddeveloping positivethinkingstyles. Majorityofthegirlscouldovercomefromtheacademic stressbyadeptingemotionaloutletslikeCrying,praying,seekingadvicefrom parentsandfriends,watchingmoviesandtelevisionviewing. The findingsofthepresentstudycouldbeusefulfortheparents,colleges and coaching centres to provide a congenial family and college environment toreduce the amountofacademic stress ofstudentswho are appealingforentranceexaminations.Asmanystudentsareverykeeninentering intomedicalcollegesandthenumberofcollegesareverylimited,thereisaneed toincreasethenumberofmedicalcollegesinAndhraPradeshandprovidescope formorenumberofstudentstoachievetheirlifeambition.
