ROLE OF MULTIVARIATE FACTORS IN OBESITY AMONG SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN

Abstract
Obesity is a condition ofexcess adiposetissue associated withadversehealthoutcomes. Obesechildrentendtobecomeobeseadultsand forthis reason the prevention of overweight in childhood has been suggested as one means of preventing adult diseases associated with obesity.Thepresentstudywastakenupwiththemainobjectiveoffinding theroleofmultivariatefactorsinobesityamongschoolagedchildren. The studywas conducted inVisakhapatnam city.Thirty obesechildren (18 females, 12 males) in theage group of742 yearswere selectedbasedontheWHO‘Zscorevalue. Informationpertaining tofamilyschoolenvironment, childsdailyactivity pattern, food intake, preferences etc., was collected from both mother and child using an interviewschedule. Findingsofthestudyrevealedthatmajorityoftheobesechildrenwere from nuclear, high income and highly educated families. The prevalence ofobesitywasfoundtobemoreingirlsthaninboys, and in thefirstbornthantheircounterparts. Televisionviewing(4to6hours/day)formed themajorleisuretimeactivity andsnackingwhileviewingtelevisionwasfoundtobecommonwith allthechildren. With regardto infantfeeding practices earlieradopted forthechildren revealed that majority of the childrenwere breast fed andintroduced tosolidfoodsasearlyas334monthsdirectlywithcommerciallytinnedbabyfoods. Foodandnutrientintakedataoftheobesechildrenindicatedanexcessive consumptionofcaloricdensefoodsand lowconsumptionof protectivefoodslikegreenleafyvegetablesandvegetables. Itwasalsofoundfromthestudythatmajorityofthemotherswere awarethattheirchildrenwereoverweight but notviewed itas a serious healthconcern. Majorityofthechildrenhadaverageacademicperformanceandwere reported to be not activelyparticipating in school extracurricular activities. Feeling oftiredness andjointpainswere reported to be the commoncomplaintsoftheobesechildren. Highbloodpressurewasnotedinalltheobesechildrenstudied.Plasma lipidlevels(HDL, LDL,VLDL,TC.TG)werefoundtobewellwithin the normal range. Thefindingsofthestudyshowedasignificant(P>0.0i)relationshipbetweenprevalenceofobesityandfamilyandsocialenvironment.Among themultivarlablefactors studied parents occupation. educationfamily income, type ofdiet, parity ofthe child, type offoods introduced during infancy, type ofschool, modeoftransport, exercise, leisuretimeactivities were shownto havesignificantrelationshipwithprevalence ofobesrty amongtheschoolagedchildrenstudied.
