Abstract
Varietal identification testing is essential forcommercial seed producton and crop certification. In the present study, an attempt was made tocharacterize and identify eight genotypes of sunflower based on seed and plant morphological characters and electrophoretic banding patterns of seed proteins. The eight genotypes of sunflower were distingui—shed from each other on the basis of differences in morphology of seeds, leaves, stem and floral characters. The plant height, 100 seed weight, number of seeds/head, weight of seeds/head, head diamter, seed yield and protein content varied significantly among the genotypes. The electrophoretic banding pattern of seed proteins for each of the genotypes was unique and proved to be reliable and quick method for identification.
