Abstract
This study consisted of ten apparently healthy buffaloes and twenty clinical cases with respiratory ailments. Ten apparently healthy buffaloes were kept as control group to obtain normal values for haematology, endoscopic findings and bronchoalveolar lavage studies. Twenty clinical cases were identified based on detailed clinical examination and haematology. Respiratory endoscopy, bronchoalveolar lavage studies and endoscopy guided biopsy studies were done in both control and clinical cases. The study revealed higher incidence of respiratory diseases in adult graded Murrah buffaloes between 5-6 years of age. Excessive lacrimation, open mouth breathing, cough, bilateral nasal discharge, unilateral epistaxis, congested conjunctival mucous membrane and dyspnea were the consistent clinical findings. On physical examination, elevated rectal temperature, tachypnea, and adventitious lung sounds such as crackles, wheezes and stridor were the common findings. On haematological examination, neutrophilic leukocytosis and lymphocytosis were observed in clinical cases. Congestion of mucous membrane and mucopurulent exudation throughout the respiratory tract from nasal cavity to bronchioles, tumor mass in nasal cavity, lymphoid follicle hyperplasia and fungal plaques in bronchi were the endoscopic findings observed in clinical cases. Cytology of bronchoalveolar lavage revealed increased number of neutrophils, epithelial cells and plasma cells in clinical cases. Pasteurella spp., Pseudomonas spp., Klebsiella spp., Aspergillus spp., Histoplasma capsulatum and Escherichia coli were the common isolates from clinical cases. Histopathological finding of the nasal tumor revealed the features of fibrosarcoma.
