Abstract
The present study has been undertaken to study the role of producers' associations in the marketing of major fruit crops viz., banana, grape and pomegranate in Western Maharashtra. The investigation was based on cross-sectional data related to the marketing of major fruit crops collected from the members and non-members of the producers' association. The information pertaining to the marketing activities of fruit crops was collected from the fruit producers' association. The data for the year 1996 97 were used for the study. A multiple linear regression analysis was carried out for estimating the factors affecting the net price realised by the fruit growers. The study results revealed that, the growth of producers' association with repect to other share capital was quite satisfactory. The performance was poor in respect of increase in the membership and their share contribution. The member and non-member producers' of banana, grape and pomegranate sent their produce to different markets instead of concentrating on a single market. However, a proportion of produce sent to distant markets through producers' association was relatively higher ion the case of members in comparison with that of non-members. At the overall level, the per quintal cost of marketing of banana, grape and pomegranate worked out to Rs. 118.43, Rs. 777.00 (4 kg box) and Rs. 371.74 for the members and Rs. 130.73, Rs. 765.00 and Rs. 357.91 for the non-members, . respectively. The per quintal wholesale price received for the banana, grape and pomegranate was Rs. 368.04, Rs. 1974.00 (4 kg box) and Rs. 1023 11, respectively for the members of producers' association and that received by the non-members was Rs. 356.12, Rs. 1846.00 and Rs. 950.52, respectively. The producers share in wholesale price of banana, grape and pomegranate was 67.82 per cent, 62 per cent and 60.62 per cent for the members while, it was 63.30 per cent, 62 per cent and 58.40 per cent for the non-members of banana and grape and pomegranate producers' associations. In general, the cost incurred by the wholesalers, commission of the wholesalers and cost incurred by the association were relatively lower for the members than that of non-members. The area (xi), lot size (x2), grade I (x3) and time of sale I (x5) were highly significant factors for the members and non-members as well as for increasing the net price received by the farmers. Among the different producers' association of pomegranate producers' association was found to be more profitable than that of grape and banana producers' association. The findings of the study advocates the need for increasing the net price received by the fruit growers and increasing the share of producer in the wholesale price by establishing the similar type of producers' associatiion for covering all fruits and strengthening the existing producers' association.
