Abstract
An investigation was undertaken to evaluate the soil
fertility status of Ganapavaram (South) village of Karlapalem
Mandal of Guntur district. The study indicated that 52% of
surface soil samples were neutral, 30, of samples were weakly
alkaline, 14% of samples were tending to become alkali and 4%
of samples were alkali in soil reaction. Regarding soluble
salts, 48% of samples were normal, 22% of samples were
critical for germination, 23% of samples were critical for
growth of salt sensitive crops and 7% samples were injurious
to most of the crops.
The surface samples were low in organic carbon and
available nitrogen, medium in available phosphorus and high
in available potassium with an average nutrient index values
of 1.43, 2.08 and 2.63 respectively. Tt1e surface soils
contained adequate quantities (above cr1tical limit) of
available Cu, Fe and Mn, while the available Zn was below the
critical limit in 55% of samples.
In ~:~se of sub surface soil samples 31% ~f samples were
neutral 45% samples were weakly alkaline, 16% of samples were
tending to become alkali and 8% of samples were alkali in
soils reaction. Regarding soluble salta, 611 of samples were
normal, 19% of samples were critical for germination, 17% of
samples were critical for growth of salt sensitive crops and
3% of samples were injurious to most of the crops.
The present investigation also revealed that the sub surface
soil samples were low in organic carbon and available
nitrogen, medium in available phosphorus and high in
available potassium with an average nutrient index values of
1.06, 1.05, 1.85 and 2.60 respectively. Regarding available
micronutrients, Cu, Fe and Mn were found to be above critical
limit, while zinc was found to be below critical limit in 54%
of samples.
The soil fertility maps of Ganapavaram (South) village
in respect of pH, EC, organ1c carbon, available nitrogen,
phosphorus, potassium, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn were prepared and
presented.
