Abstract
A field experiment was conducted in red sandy
loam soils at the experimental farm of the National
Research Centre for Sorghum, Rajendranagar, (Hyderabad)
which consisted of three levels of P2o5 namely 40, 100
and 160 kg ha-1 • Eight cultivars of sorghum namely M 35-1,
SPV 839, SPV 913, Lakhadi, CSH 12R, csv SR, Swathi and CSH
13R were tested with a view to study their drought
tolerance cap~city, root ~rowth, water extraction pattern
and nutrient uptake at the three different levels of P2o5
applied to the soil It was observed that SPV 839 has
recorded a greater root length of 7.74 M with 100 kg ha-1
of P2 o5 applied which was 42 per cent greater than the
local variety, M. 35-1. The mean root weight of all the
cultivars were increased by 5 . 28 and 6.89 per cent a s the
applied P2o5 levels were increased from 40 to 160 kg ha-1
respectively. An amount of 31.6 cm of water was extracted
by M 35-1 while 30.8 cm of water only was extracted by SPV
839 with 40 kg ha-l of P2o5 applied. The mean values of
drought tolerance index of all the cultivars had increased
by i.03 per cent with 100 and by 6 . 59 per cent with 160 Kg
ha- of P2o5 applied~~ compared to 40 Kg ha-1 of Pio51 - • . • ::--~ -:: • ... • 1 • - - The level of 160 kg 1a
of P2o~ was found to be on par with that of 100 kg ha- of
P2o5 1n increasing the drought tolerance index of a
cultivar. The drought tolerance indices of M 35-1 (a
local variety) and SPV 839 (Hybrid) at 45 days growth
period were 6.72 and 6.43 respectively. The cultivar SPV
839 had recorded a maximum grain yield followed by M 35-
1, but the drought tolerance index of SPV 839 was found to
be almost equal to that of M 35-1. The mean nutrient
uptake by all the cultivars had increased by 10.9 and 13.9
per cent as the P 2o5 levels were increased from 40 to 160
kg ha-1 respectively. The studies indicated that the SPV
839 was found to be the best drought tolerant cultivar
which gave maximum grain yield with 100 kg ha-l of P2o5
level at the agroclimatic conditions of Rajendranagar
(Hyderabad).
