Abstract
The objectives of the present study are - to study the feasibility of blending of silk with polyester and silk with acrylic in lap form; to see the feasibility of silk with polyester and silk with acrylic on six spindled hand charka; to test the serviceability characteristics of Mulberry silk blends with polyester and acrylic in 60:40 proportions, to find out the consumer acceptability of the silk blended fabrics and to make a comparative cost assessment between silk blended materials and all pure silk material. Raw silk was procured from Hyderabad Cocoon Market. Degumming and dyeing of the silk was carried out at the weaver's place in Aler, Warangal district in Hyderabad. Dyed polyester and acrylic fibres were procured from Shree Manufacture Company Limited, Hyderabad. Processing of silk, polyester and acrylic fibres, blending in lap form on fine and coarse fillet openers, spinning of the blended fibres on six spindled hand charka and weaving were under taken at Khadi Villge Industries Commission (KVIC), Bangalore. The woven fabric was desized and subjected to roller pressing and calendering. Comparative serviceability assessment were conducted for all the three fabrics i.e., 100 per cent silk, silk polyester blend and silk acrylic blend. The cost of the three fabrics were calculated and the consumer's opinion regarding the three J I fabrics was studied by subjective evaluation. obtained was analysed statistically. The data The results of the laboratory tests revealed that silk polyester fabric showed good results in almost all the physical tests conducted. Therefore, it can be concluded that silk polyester blended fabric in 60:40 proportion can be substituted for pure silk fabric, as it exhibited good service - ability characteristics, apart from being economical compared to all pure silk and silk acrylic blended fabric. From the subjective evaluation it was found that, majority of the respondents preferred all pure silk fabric, based on aesthetic characteristics, whereas based on cost, silk polyester blended fabric was preferred. But when both aesthetic characteristics and cost were considered silk polyester blended fabric was preferred due to its good over all appearances, good drape and lustre, goo<l wash and wear easy care properties followed by all pure silk fabric and silk acrylic blended fabric.
