BIOMASS AND PRODUCTIVITY IN SHORT ROTATION EUCALYPTUS (Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm.) PROVENANCES

Abstract
The present study was carried out to evaluate the performance of biomass and productivity in short rotation Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm.) provenances during 2001-2002 at the Experimental Research Farm, Department of Forestry, Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, Raipur (C.G.). The above ground biomass ranged between 9.99 t ha"1 to 21.69 t ha"1 in seven short rotation Eucalyptus tereticornis provenances. The highest above ground biomass was recorded in Raipur provenance (21.69 t ha"1), while the lowest was recorded in Australian provenance (9.99 t ha"1). The higher proportion of above ground biomass was allocated to bole (60.4 to 63.3 %) followed by branch (12.01 to 14.46 %) and foliage (4.14 to 4.81 %). The above ground herbaceous biomass varied form 1.26 to 2.46 t ha"1, which was maximum under Australian provenance and minimum under Sitanadi sanctuary provenance. The below ground (coarse roots + fine roots) biomass in different provenances of Eucalyptus, varied from 2.58 t ha"1 to 5.3 t ha"1 with highest being (5.3 t ha"1) in Raipur provenance and lowest (2.58 t ha"1) in Australia provenance. The total stand biomass (above ground + below ground) varied from 12.57 t ha"1 to 26.99 t ha"1 and was also highest in Raipur provenance and lowest in Australian provenance. The annual net primary production of trees varied from 4.9 to 10.83 t ha"1 yr"1 and was highest in Sitanadi sanctuary provenance (10.83 t ha"1 yr"n) and lowest in Australia provenance (4.9 t ha"1 yr"1). The total net production of all the Eucalyptus stands averaged 10.14 t ha"1 yr"1. The total net production of the above ground trees accounted for 54 - 71 % and below ground net production was 13-21 %. The above ground herbaceous shoots contributed 10-33 % to the total NPP. On short term basis it can be concluded that the provenance from Raipur, Kondagaon and Kolkata origin are superior over others hence, the same can be recommended for the propagation.
