Abstract
The investigation entitled “ Studies on losses of tamarind fruit and possibility of implementation of safe storage technique” was conducted at Department of Entomology, IGAU, Raipur (C.G.) during the year 2004-05. Ten insect pests namely aphids, Toxoptera aurantii, jassids, Amrasca biggutula biggutula, thrips , Scirtothrips dorsalis, mealy bugs , Nipaecoccus viridis, scale insects, Aonidiella orientalis, semilooper, leaf feeding caterpillar, cow bug , butterfly, Charax fablus and fruit borer, Aphomia gularis were found to infest tamarind tree in field, while tamarind beetle, Pachymerus gonogra, rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae were found to infest tamarind fruit in storage. The fruit borer infestation was started in field and carried on in storage. The average field losses of tamarind fruits of Bastar region ranged between 27-30 %. The radiation treatments above 500 gray i.e. 500 gray, 750 gray, 1000 gray, 1500 gray and 2000 gray were found effective in preventing the infestation of fruit borer under storage condition, while the treatments below 500 gray i.e. untreated control, one day solarisation, seven days solarisation, fifteen days solarisation , 100 gray radiation and 250 gray radiation failed to check the infestation of fruit borer in storage.
