Abstract
The present investigation entitled, "Effect of various treatments on seed germination and seedling vigour in aonla {Emblica officinalis Gaertn.)" was carried out at Instructional-cum-Research Orchard, Department of Horticulture, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri, during the year 2003-04. The experiment consisted of fifteen treatments with three replications in randomized block design. The seeds were soaked in solutions of GA3 having various concentrations of 250 ppm, 500 ppm and 750 ppm and in water for 24 hrs. The seeds were also treated with Azospirillum bio-fertilizer and Thiram @ 0.2% and Carbendazim @ 0.1%. The objective of this experiment was to assess the possibilities of improving the seed germination and seedling vigour in aonla. The earliness in germination (6.33 days) and maximum germination percentage (75.55%) of aonla seeds was recorded by GA3 750 ppm treatment alone and when combined with Azospirillum as compared to water soaking and control treatments. Contd... The length of shoot at 30th and 60th DAS was better with all the concentrations of GA3 + Azospirillum over other treatments. However, GA3 750 ppm + Azospirillum recorded maximum shoot length (12.00 cm) than control. The maximum number of leaves (20.00) were recorded with GA3 750 ppm treatment. The stem girth indicated non-significant differences among the treatments. The root growth in respect of length of taproot, number of secondary roots and mean length of secondary roots was better with GA3 solution at various concentrations in combination with Azospirillum bio-fertilizer. The maximum length of taproot (23.76 cm) was recorded under Control + Azospirillum treatment followed by GA3 500 ppm + Azospirillum (22.43 cm). The maximum number of secondary roots (74.66) were recorded under treatment GA3 500 ppm + Azospirillum whereas maximum mean length of econdary roots (11.93 cm) was recorded under GA3 500 ppm treatment. The fresh weight of seedlings at 60th DAS indicated non-significant differences among the treatments. The highest final survival percentage (68.88%) of seedlings was noticed under treatment GA3 750 ppm + Azospirillum. Thus, it could be concluded that the soaking of seeds of aonla in GA3 750 ppm solution for 24 hrs and combined with Azospirillum bio-fertilizer was beneficial in increasing seed germination percentage and seedling vigour followed by GA3 500 ppm + Azospirillum treatment.
