    STUDY ON THE COMMERCIAL FARMING AND MARKETING OF STRAWBERRY IN CHANHO BLOCK OF RANCHI DISTRICT OF JHARKHAND

    A study on the commercial farming and marketing of strawberries in Chanho block of Ranchi district of Jharkhand was done under the department of Center of Agribusiness Management in Birsa Agricultural University, Kanke Ranchi (Jharkhand). The present investigation was conducted in selected fifteen villages from Chanho block of Ranchi district. From each village 3 growers were selected to make a total sample of 45 growers for the present study. The main objective of the investigation was 1. To study the commercial farming of strawberry in Chanho block of Ranchi district. 2. To study the marketing channels of strawberry in Ranchi. It was observed that all the respondents were not similar in their characteristics. The personal, socio-economic and psychological characteristics of the respondents revealed that strawberry growers had a significant relationship with the level of adoption of improved practices. The personal, socio-economic and psychological characteristics of the respondents revealed that farmers' age has no relationship with the level of adoption. The study revealed that majority farmers belong to middle age group (51.11%), literate (75.56), 10-15 years farming experience (66.67), bore well (44.44%) and well (55.56%) use the major sources for irrigation, 48.89% of the farmers in study area possess small land holding no one had more than 4.00 ha of agricultural land. Maximum numbers of farmers used mixed sources such as animal, mechanical and manual power for field preparation. Majority of the respondents (62.22%) pursued training for 5 days at Krishi Gram Vikas Kendra Ranchi. The majority of respondents were cultivating strawberries in less than 50 dismils and have adopted improved practices for strawberry cultivation. Maximum strawberry growers use the plastic mulch for strawberry cultivation and used Winter Dawn variety for cultivation. Many growers felt it necessary that a proper facility should be created for the development of strawberry cultivation. The average cost for strawberry enervation comes around 400 Rs per kg. Majority of the respondents were selling strawberry fruits to FPOs while some sell it in the local market and wholesale market.
