Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry, Solan

Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, was established on 1st December, 1985 with the objective to promote education, research and extension education in the fields of Horticulture, Forestry and allied disciplines. Late Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar, the first Chief Minister and the architect of Himachal Pradesh perceived the importance of Horticulture and Forestry to develop and improve the State economy which led to the establishment of this University. Its history lies in erstwhile Himachal Agricultural College, Solan, established in 1962 and affiliated to the Panjab University. It became one of the campuses of Agriculture Complex of Himachal Pradesh University on its formation in 1970. Consequent upon the establishment of Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya in 1978, this campus became its Horticulture Complex and finally in 1985, assumed the status of a State University, being the only University in the country engaged exclusively in teaching, research and extension in Horticulture and Forestry. The University is located at Nauni in Solan District of Himachal Pradesh, 13 km from Solan on Solan-Rajgarh Road, at an elevation of 1300 metres above mean sea level. Solan town is situated on national highway (NH-22) and is well connected by train and bus services. The University has four constituent colleges, out of which, two are located at the main campus Nauni, one for horticulture and the other for forestry, having 9 and 7 departments, respectively. The third College i.e., College of Horticulture & Forestry is located at Neri in Hamirpur District on Nadaun-Hamirpur state highway, about 6 Km from Hamirpur town and is well connected with bus service. The college offers three Undergraduate Degree Programmes i.e. BSc (Hons.) Horticulture, BSc (Hons.) Forestry and B. Tech. Biotechnology and MSc degree programme in a few subjects. The fourth college i.e. College of Horticulture and Forestry, Thunag (Mandi) is located at Thunag District Mandi. This college offer BSc (Hons.) Horticulture and BSc (Hons.) Forestry degree programme. In addition, there are five Regional Research Stations, 12 Satellite Stations and five Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) situated in different zones of the State.

    PERFORMANCE OF WINTER FLOWERING ANNUALS UNDER NATURAL FARMING SYSTEM

    The present investigation titled, “Performance of winter flowering annuals under natural farming system” was carried out in the experimental farm of the department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (H.P.) during October, 2022 to April, 2023. To study the effect of natural farming system on different winter flowering annuals. Treatments of eight winter season flowering annuals with two sub treatments viz. T1: Natural farming system i.e Jeevamrit @500ml/m2 at 15 days interval and T2: Inorganic farming system i.e Recommended dose of fertilizer NPK (20:20:20) were applied through basal dose as well as drenchind method. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Block Design (Factorial) with sixteen treatments combinations of replicated three times. The observations recorded were based on growth, flowering and seed parameters. The results revealed that natural farming system performed better as compared to inorganic farming system in terms of growth, flowering and seed parameters. Maximum plant height (53.86cm), plant spread (37.65cm), number of branches per plant (14.33), number of flowers per plant (56.38), flower diameter (4.09cm), duration of flowering (40.49days), seeds per flower (75.76), seed yield per plant (3.68g), seed yield per plot (33.37g) and 1000 seed weight (1.74g) were obtained from plants under natural farming system. While, minimum days taken for flowering (90.53days) were recorded from plants under inorganic farming system.

    STUDIES ON PROPAGATION OF MARIGOLD CV. ‘SIRACOLE’

    The present investigation entitled ‘Studies on propagation of marigold cv. Siracole’, was carried out at Floriculture Farm of Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (HP) during 2022-23. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Block Design (Factorial) to study the effect of various combinations of rooting media i.e., Cocopeat, Sand, Perlite and Vermicompost and different rooting hormone i.e., 500 ppm NAA, 250 ppm NAA on quality cutting production of marigold under different planting dates from February to July. Different root parameters like percent rooting, number of roots, length of the longest root, root fresh and dry weight, root volume and percent survival were observed to check the rooting performance of cuttings under different NAA treatments, various rooting media and different planting dates. From the studies, early rooting (18.33 days), maximum number of roots per cutting (43.37), fresh weight of roots (251.23 mg), dry weight of roots (29.69 mg), root volume (0.359 cm3) and highest percent survival (97.39%) of rooted cuttings were recorded when cuttings were treated with 500 ppm NAA as a rooting hormone and planted in the medium consisting of Cocopeat + Sand + Vermicompost (1:1:1v/v) in the month of June. While maximum percent rooting (96.82%) was found when 500 ppm treated cuttings were planted in the media comprising Cocopeat + Sand + Perlite (1:1:1v/v) in the month of June. From the studies, it may be concluded that 500ppm NAA is the best rooting hormone treatment for quality cutting production of marigold cv. ‘Siracole’ when planted in rooing medium consisting of Cocopeat + Sand + Vermicompost (1:1:1v/v). Further, June planting was found most suitable for quality cutting production.

    STUDY ON THE SUITABILITY OF WINTER SEASON FLOWERING ANNUALS FOR CUT FLOWER PRODUCTION UNDER INORGANIC AND NATURAL FARMING PRACTICES

    The present investigation title “Study on the suitability of winter season flowering annuals for cut flower production under inorganic and natural farming practices” was carried out in the experimental farm of the department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (H.P.) during October, 2022 to April, 2023 for cut flower production and to check the vase life. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Block Design (Factorial), six winter season annuals were selected with two treatments viz. Jeevamrint @500 ml/m2 (drenching) in natural farming and recommended dose of fertilizer (basal dose) as conventional method replicated thrice. The observations recorded were based on vegetative, flowering and longevity of different winter season annuals. The results revealed that among two cultivation system maximum plant height (75.72 cm), maximum plant spread (36.67 cm), minimum number of days taken for flower bud formation (86.30 days), minimum number of days taken to flowering (118.22 days), maximum flower diameter (3.29 cm), maximum duration of flowering (38.32 days), maximum number of cut stems per plant (10.42), maximum stem length (46.67 cm) and maximum vase life (10.20) were observed in natural farming system

    STANDARDIZATION OF DRYING METHOD FOR THE PREPARATION OF VALUE-ADDED PRODUCTS BY RESIN EMBEDDING

    The present investigation title “Standardization of drying method for the preparation of value-added products by resin embedding” was carried out in the research farm and floral craft laboratory of the department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (HP) during October, 2022 to June, 2023.The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Block Design (Factorial) with three flowering annuals viz., Viola tricolor, Helichrysum bracteatum and Limonium sinuatum and five drying methods viz., drying in silica gel, press drying in blotting paper, press drying in magazine paper, press drying in newspaper and press drying in wax paper. The flowers dried by various methods were subjected to embedded drying using various combinations of epoxy resin and hardener. The products made were paper weight of pansy, helichrysum and statice and keyring of pansy and statice using different formulations of epoxy resin. The results revealed that among different methods of drying, maximum moisture loss (46.39%) was observed when flowers were dried in silica gel, minimum days for drying (4.77) were recorded when flower crops were dried in silica gel, highest score for colour retention in flower crops (4.56) out of a total of 5 was observed in press drying in magazine paper, highest score for texture of flower (4.56) out of a total of 5 was observed in press drying in magazine paper. In general, press drying in wax paper followed by press drying in magazine paper proved to be superior over other methods of drying for retaining colour, texture, and shape of Viola tricolor, Helichrysum bracteatum and Limonium sinuatum for the preparation of value-added products by resin embedding. Among different methods of resin embedding, mixing ratio of epoxy resin and hardener (3:1) combined with a curing period of 48 hours yields the best results in terms of transparency, clarity, and overall appearance.

    EFFECT OF SPLIT APPLICATION OF NITROGEN THROUGH UREA AND NANO UREA ON GROWTH AND FLOWERING OF CHRYSANTHEMUM UNDER POLYHOUSE CONDITIONS

    Abstract The present investigation titled “Effect of split application of nitrogen through urea and nano urea on growth and flowering of chrysanthemum under polyhouse conditions” was carried out at Hi-Tech Floriculture Farm of Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, (Nauni), Solan (HP) during 2022. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design (Factorial) comprising of two cultivars and seven different nutritional modules replicated thrice. The treatment combination comprised of different doses of urea and nano urea applied once a week, twice in a week and once in fortnight starting after pinching and continued up to twelve weeks. Urea was applied as a drench and nano urea as a foliar spray. Maximum plant height (166.65 cm), plant spread (57.64 cm), leaf length (13.36 cm), leaf width (7.73 cm), number of side shoots per plant (5.40), minimum number of days taken for flower bud initiation (120.83 days), minimum days taken to flowering (150.17 days), flower diameter (16.14 cm), number of marketable cut flower stems per plant (5.30), length of cut flower stem (109.85 cm), weight of cut flower stem (138.07 g), number of cut flower stem per meter square (79.50), vase life (26.60 days), duration of flowering (23.09 days), chlorophyll (a) content (66.17 μg/ml), chlorophyll (b) content (25.26 μg/ml) and total chlorophyll content (40.74 μg/ml) was recorded under the application of nutritional module M3 i.e., 100 ppm nano urea once in fortnight starting after pinching and continued up to twelve weeks. The lowest available soil nitrogen (294.94 kg/ha), phosphorus (18.46 kg/ha), potassium (209.83 kg/ha), organic carbon (1.02 %) and EC (0.67) content was recorded under the application of nutritional module M3. The nutritional module M3 had maximum B:C ratio for both the cultivars i.e., ‘White Star’ (4.24) and ‘Yellow Star’ (3.22).

    STUDIES ON GROWTH AND FLOWERING BEHAVIOUR OF ‘EARLY WHITE’ CHRYSANTHEMUM (Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev.)

    Abstract The present investigation titled Studies on growth and flowering behaviour of ‘Early White’ Chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev.) was carried out at Hi-Tech Floriculture Farm of Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, (Nauni) Solan (HP) during 2022-23. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design (RBD) comprising of six different planting densities viz., 9 plants/m2 (D1) i.e., control, 16 plants/m2 (D2), 25 plants/m2 (D3), 36 plants/m2 (D4), 60 plants/m2 (D5) and 100 plants/m2 (D6) each replicated five times. The data was recorded for two flowering flushes i.e., summer flush (May-June) and winter flush (October-November). From the present investigation, it can be concluded that all the vegetative parameters viz., plant height (90.83 cm), plant spread (30.16 cm), Number of branches per plant (3.98) and stem girth 7.37 mm); flowering parameters viz., days taken to visible bud formation (79.51 days), days taken to flowering (103.86 cm), flower size (11.73 cm), length of cut stem (80.33 cm), weight of cut stem (54.27 g), vase life (19.09 days) and duration of flowering (22.84) and yield parameters viz., number of cut stems per plant (3.41), number of cut flower yield per square metre (103.44) were found better during winter flush of the crop as compared to summer flush. Among different planting densities, maximum plant spread (38.48 cm), number of branches per plant (4.76), flower size (12.40 cm), weight of cut stem (69.22 g), stem girth (8.81 mm), number of cut stems per plant (4.61), vase life (20.59 days) and duration of flowering (25.94 days) were recorded under lowest planting density i.e., D1 (9 plants/m2). Whereas, earliest flower bud initiation (82.34 days), earliest flowering (109.15 days), maximum plant height (92.98 cm), cut stem length (83.30), cut flower yield per square metre (160.10), cut flower yield per square metre per year (320.20) and highest benefit cost ratio (4.56) were observed under highest planting density i.e., D6 (100 plants/m2).

    STANDARDIZATION OF INTEGRATED NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT MODULES FOR GROWTH AND FLOWERING IN CHRYSANTHEMUM (Dendranthema ˣ grandiflora Tzvelev)

    The present investigation entitled “Standardization of integrated nutrient management modules for growth and flowering in chrysanthemum (Dendranthema × grandiflora Tzvelev)” was carried out at Research Farm of Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (HP) - 173 230 during the year 2021-2022 to find out the optimum dose of NPK in combination with biostimulants for growth and flowering in chrysanthemum cv. ‘Purnima’. In the experiment various biostimulants i.e. fulvic acid, humic acid, sea weed extract and arka microbial consortium were used with different levels of recommended doses of NPK fertilizers i.e. 50%, 75% and 100% RDF in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with three number of replications. From the experiment, maximum plant height (50.76 cm), plant spread (27.74 cm), flower duration (57.75 days), flower diameter (8.86 cm), number of cut stems per plant (4.87), number of cut stems per square meter (43.8), weight of cut stem (25.16 g) and vase life (22.27 days) was observed when 3ml/l humic acid (after 30, 60 and 90 days of planting) was applied to the plants with 75% RDF. Further, early flower bud formation (43.85 days), and flowering (101.50 days) was also recorded in 3ml/l humic acid (after 30, 60 and 90 days of planting) + 75% RDF. Benefit Cost ratio (B:C ratio) (2.11:1) was also found highest in this treatment

    Evaluation of Marigold genotypes for growth and flowering

    ABSTRACT The present investigation titled, “Evaluation of Marigold genotypes for growth and flowering” was carried out at the experimental farm of Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Dr. Y.S. Parmar, University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan, Himachal Pradesh during August, 2021 to March, 2022. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Block Design with three replications. Eleven genotypes of marigold were evaluated in this experiment. Significant variations were observed among all the genotypes for all the parameters under study. Maximum plant height (96.80 cm), number of primary branches (11.20), number of secondary branches (44.74), maximum flower size (5.78 cm), flower yield per plant (802.00 g), flowering duration (95.14 days) and benefit-cost ratio was observed in the genotype ‘Punjab Gainda-1’. The genotype ‘Bidhan Kali Gainda’ was observed to have maximum plant spread (72.17 cm). Minimum days taken to flower bud appearance and days to flowering were observed in the genotype ‘Pusa Deep’ (43.67 and 55.75 days, respectively). Maximum number of flowers per plant was observed in the genotype ‘Bidhan Kali Gainda’ (393.47). It was concluded that the genotype ‘Punjab Gainda-1’, BM-4’ and ‘Pusa Narangi Gainda’ were promising for loose flower production.

    STUDIES ON THE EFFECT OF GROWING MEDIA, PINCHING AND GROWTH REGULATORS ON QUALITY POT PLANT PRODUCTION OF Fuchsia x hybrida UNDER MID HILL CONDITIONS

    ABSTRACT The present investigation titled “Studies on the effect of growing media, pinching and growth regulators on quality pot plant production of Fuchsia x hybrida under mid hill conditions” was carried out at Horticultural Research and Training Station and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kandaghat, Dr. Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan (HP) during 2021-2022. The experiment was conducted under naturally ventilated polyhouse of 105 x 7 x 3.5 m² size and it was laid out in a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four levels each of growing media namely M1:Soil+ Sand+ FYM (1:1:1 v/v), M2:Cocopeat + Soil + Sand + Leafmould + FYM (2:1:1:1:1 v/v), M3:Cocopeat+Perlite+Vermiculite + Vermicompost (2:1:1:1 v/v), M4:Cocopeat + Vermicompost + Leafmould (2:1:1 v/v), three level of growth regulator G1:Control (0 ppm), G2:Benzyl adenine (150 ppm), G3:CPPU (10 ppm) and two method of pinching P1:Single pinch and P2:Double pinch makeup total of 24 treatment combinations which were replicated thrice each having 10 pots accommodating one plant per pot. Plants were raised through terminal cutting and were planted in 6-inch size pots. Study revealed that maximum plant height (33.13 cm), plant spread (33.37 cm), length of side shoots (24.67 cm) and minimum number of days taken for visible bud formation (92.40 days), number of days taken for peak flowering (160.60 days) was recorded when the single pinched plants were grown in media consisting cocopeat + Vermicompost + Leafmould (2:1:1 v/v) and sprayed with 150 ppm of benzyl adenine. However, maximum number of side shoots (27.33), number of flowers per plant (55.67), number of flowers per plant open at a time (42.93), duration of flowering (24.67days) was recorded when double pinched plants were grown in growing media consisting of cocopeat + vermicompost + Leafmould (2:1:1 v/v) and were sprayed with 150 ppm of benzyl adenine. The maximum flower diameter (4.61 cm) was recorded when single pinched plants were grown in medium consisting cocopeat + vermicompost + leafmould (2:1:1 v/v) and sprayed with 10 ppm of CPPU. The maximum pot presentability score (94.40) was obtained when the double pinched plants were grown in media consisting cocopeat + vermicompost + leafmould (2:1:1 v/v) and sprayed with 150 ppm of benzyl adenine. Based on the present investigation findings, double pinched plants of Fuchsia x hybrida grown in potting medium consisting of cocopeat + vermicompost+ leafmould (2:1:1 v/v), sprayed with 150 ppm of benzyl adenine recommended for quality pot plant production of Fuchsia x hybrida with highest benefit cost ratio of 2.44:1.
