Genetic evaluation of frieswal bulls using single and multiple trait animal model
(LUVAS, 2016) Varma, Rakesh; Yadav, A.S.
The present study was conducted on data pertaining to 274 crossbred cattle from the history-cum-pedigree sheets maintained in the Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding, Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Hisar, Haryana over a period of 20 years from 1996 to 2015. The overall least squares mean were 2262.98±57.52kg, 307.27±5.93 days, 10.30±0.21 kg, 5.51±0.13kg, 1.37±0.03kg, 7.42±0.14kg, 1245.36±16.97 days, 132.09±5.61, 412.70±5.60, 1.96±0.11, 41.57±4.96 and 94.55±4.03 for FLY, FLL, FPY, MCI, MSC, MLL, FDP, AFC, FSP, FCI, NSC, FHSC and CFSI, respectively. Sire group had significant effect on FPY, MSC and MLL. The Period of calving had significant effect on AFC and all the production traits except FDP. Season of calving had significant effect on FLY, FPY, MCI, FDP, FSP and FCI. The estimates of heritability of first lactation performance traits were moderate to high (0.20 to 0.46). There was a high positive genetic and phenotypic correlation among production efficiency traits. The genetic and phenotypic correlations between FLY and FPY were 0.85±0.28 and 0.70±0.04, respectively. The genetic and phenotypic correlations between FLY and FLL were 0.72±0.56 and 0.62±0.04, respectively. Genetic and phenotypic correlation among FSP, FCI, FHSC and CFSI were high. Phenotypic correlations of AFC with all traits were low. High genetic and phenotypic correlation of FPY with other production efficiency traits indicated that selection on the basis of FPY could improve the other correlated traits through correlated response and could also reduce the generation interval. Sire no. 3 (king) occupied prime position on the basis of estimated breeding values of FLY obtained using single trait, two trait and three trait animal model. Product moment and Rank correlations among estimated breeding values of FLY obtained using single trait, two trait and three trait animal model were high and significant. The inclusion of reproduction traits along with production traits improved the differentiating ability of multiple trait animal model with respect to the production performance as the multiple trait model accounted for the correlation between the production and reproduction traits.
