Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar

Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University popularly known as HAU, is one of Asia's biggest agricultural universities, located at Hisar in the Indian state of Haryana. It is named after India's seventh Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh. It is a leader in agricultural research in India and contributed significantly to Green Revolution and White Revolution in India in the 1960s and 70s. It has a very large campus and has several research centres throughout the state. It won the Indian Council of Agricultural Research's Award for the Best Institute in 1997. HAU was initially a campus of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. After the formation of Haryana in 1966, it became an autonomous institution on February 2, 1970 through a Presidential Ordinance, later ratified as Haryana and Punjab Agricultural Universities Act, 1970, passed by the Lok Sabha on March 29, 1970. A. L. Fletcher, the first Vice-Chancellor of the university, was instrumental in its initial growth.

    Role of Women in Vegetable Cultivation

    Historians believe that it was women, who first started cultivation of crop plants, and initiated the art and science of !arming. Women started gathering seeds from native flora, and cultivated those of interest from the point of view of food, fodder, fiber and fuel, around their huntsmen, when their men folk went in woods for bunting. Even today, women are traditionally known for their seed selection ability {Swaminathan, 1985). Aronotf and Crano (1975) on the basis of the study o! 862 societies revealed that the world wide percentage of food production contributed by women is 43.88 with a range of 32.24 to 50.73 over specific culture areas. In the agricultural sector women play an important role by contributing about 40 per cent of the labour force and their relative importance increases with domination of agricultural economy.

    India has a rich heritage of medical and health sciences. The philosophy of Ayurveda and the surgical skills enunciated by Charkra and Shusharua bear testimony to our ancient tradition in the scientific health care of our people. The approach of our ancient medical systems was of a holistic nature, which took into account all aspects of human health and disease. Over the centuries with foreign influences and mingling of cultures, various systems of medicine have made a major impact on the entire approach to health care and pattern of development. By the middle of the 19th century, the refinement of the scientific net hod had catalyses the developments of microbiology, immunology and epidemiology as distinct sciences, this process continues today, The identification of new micro-organisms, the production of effective immunizing agents, and the discovery of human carriers, animal reservoirs and vectors helped dispel people's beliefs, myths and superstitions.
