Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

    STUDIES ON FLEXIBLE ENDOSCOPY FOR DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT IN SMALL ANIMALS

    Clinical studies on flexible endoscopy were carried out in 20 dogs to standardize the technique of oesophagoscopy, gastroscopy and tracheobronchoscopy for visualization of upper gastrointestinal tract and upper respiratory tract in canines and to record the incidence of oesophageal, gastric and upper respiratory tract disorders in relation to surgical ailment in veterinary small animal practice along with other relevant parameters having surgical importance. Out of total 7,385 cases recorded from 1st January 2007 to 20th April, 2008 at the University Veterinary Clinic, Anand, 16 (6.67 %) cases out of 240 gastrointestinal disorders and 4 (6.78 %) cases out of 59 respiratory tract affected animals were subjected to flexible endoscopic procedures.

    “CLINICAL STUDIES ON LAPAROSCOPIC DIAGNOSIS IN SMALL ANIMALS

    Clinical studies on laparoscopic diagnosis of intraabdominal disorders in small animals were conducted in 15 clinical cases. Eligibility criteria for laparoscopy were preoperative evaluation of haemogram, serum biochemistry, radiography and / or ultrasonography as per the requirement to assess the intraabdominal disorders. The pneumoperitoneum was created with atmospheric air through veress needle. The 11 mm trocar cannula was used to create umbilical port for the insertion of 10 mm laparoscope along with 250 W halogen light source and digital camera attached for visualization as well as to save images of the affected organs.     STUDIES ON EXTRACAPSULAR CATARACT EXTRACTION WITH INTRAOCULAR LENS IMPLANTATION IN CANINES

    Cataract, the opacity of crystalline lens is regarded as major cause of blindness affecting dogs and different species of animals. Clinical study on extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation was conducted on 14 eyes of 13 dogs with mature cataract selected. Of 34 dogs presented with history of visual impairment due to cataract. Out of 34 dogs the incidence of cataract was higher in Spitz, and females were affected more than males. Unilateral cataract was observed in 9 cases whereas bilateral involvement was in 25 cases
