Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

    PHYTOSTABILIZATION OF CHROMIUM BY ORGANIC AMENDMENTS IN CHROMIUM SPIKED LOAMY SAND SOIL USING FODDER MAIZE (Zea maize L.)

    The pot experiment was carried out in the Net House of Micronutrient Research Project (I.C.A.R), B. A. College of Agriculture, Anand Agricultural University, Anand on the “Phytostabilization of chromium by organic amendments in chromium spiked loamy sand soil using fodder maize (Zea maize L.)” during kharif season of the year 2018. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (factorial) with three repetitions. The four level of Cr (0, 100, 200, 400 mg kg-1) and four level of organic amendments (no organic amendments, vermicompost @ 5 t ha-1, rice husk biochar @ 5 and 10 t ha-1) were tested in the experiment. Salient finding of the experiment results are encapsulated as below.

    Bifenthrin (2-methyl-3-phenylbenzyl (1RS) -cis - 3 - (2- chloro - 3, 3, 3 trifluoroprop-1-enyl) -2,2-dimthylcyclo-propanecarboxylate) is a third generation member of the pyrethroid family. It is an insecticide and acaricide which affects the nervous system and causes paralysis in insects. Bifenthrin is used both in agriculture to control sucking and biting insects like aphids, white fly, colorado beetle in various crops and in public health applications (mainly as emulsifiable concentrates or wettable powder), against mosquitoes, houseflies, cockroaches etc.

    The study entitled, “Effect of zinc nano fertilizer on growth, yield and Zn content in maize Zea mays L.)” was u ndertaken by conducting a laboratory experiment of synthesis and characterization of zinc nano fertilizer and a field experiment at Main Forage Research S tation, Anand Agricultural University, Anand (Gujarat) during r abi season of the year 2018 19. In lab oratory experiment, zinc nano fertilizer (ZnO NPs) was synthesized, using direct precipitation method and cha racterized by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Th e i nstrumental analysis results indicated that synthesized ZnO NPs were of 35 40 nm particle size , monodispersed, pure, stable and showed characteristic absorption of Zn O bond at wavenumber of 509.46 cm 1 and 604.70 cm 1

    CHARACTERIZATION OF SOILS AND UNDER GROUND WATER QUALITY OF MAHISAGAR DISTRICT OF GUJARAT

    An attempt has been made in the present study to evaluate the physical and chemical properties and fertility status of soils and quality of underground (well/tube well) water by collecting 180 underground irrigation water samples and 180 surface soil samples from cultivated fields of Mahisagar district. The mean bulk density value of the soils of Mahisagar district was 1.32Mg m-3 and it was ranged from 1.23 to 1.45 Mg m-3.The mean particle density value of the soils of Mahisagar district was 2.53 Mg m-3 and it was ranged widely from 2.32 to 2.78 Mg m-3.The porosity of soils ranged from 37.07 to 51.50 per cent with a mean value of 47.97 per cent. The overall range of MWHC was 29.25 to 64.23 per cent with a mean value of 45.97 per cent.

    Under survey work, out of 160 surface soil samples of Anand and Kheda districts, 20 and 24 % soil samples categorised under sodic soils i.e. soil having pH > 8.5 and ESP > 15.0% and EC < 4.0 dSm-1. The six different soils were selected for further study and the soils OC, available P2O5, K2O and SO4-S were ranged from low to medium range and DTPA- Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu were in medium to high range.

    A pot experiment was conducted during Kharif - 2018 in the net house of the Department of Soil Sci. and Agril. Chemistry, A. A.U., Anand to carry out a study on effect of biochar and FYM on yield, chemical composition of fodder sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) and properties of salt affected soil. The soil of experiment was loamy sand having good drainage and pH 8.0 at 0-15 cm soil depth. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design (factorial). The treatment comprised four levels of biochar (B0: 0 t ha-1, B1: 2.5 t ha-1, B2: 5.0 t ha-1 and B3 : 7.5 t ha-1) and three levels of FYM (F0 : 0 t ha-1 , F1 : 5.0 t ha-1 and F2 : 10.0 t ha-1 ).

    EFFECT OF CHELATED ZINC AND IRON APPLICATION ON GROWTH, YIELD AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF PEARLMILLET IN MIDDLE GUJARAT CONDITIONS

    The present investigation was undertaken to study the “Effect of chelated zinc and iron application on growth, yield and chemical composition of Pearl millet in middle Gujarat conditions” during kharif 2016, at Agronomy Farm, B. A. College of Agriculture, Anand Agricultural University, Anand. The soil of experimental plot was loamy sand in texture, low in organic carbon and available nitrogen, high in available phosphorus and potassium, DTPA extractable iron and zinc medium in available status. Pearlmillet variety GHB 558 was used as test crop. Total 10 treatments were included in the present investigation comprised of Zn and Fe fertilizers application through ZnSO4 (25 kg ha-1) and FeSO4 (50 kg ha-1) as well as chelated forms of Zn and Fe (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 kg ha-1). The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with four repetitions. The ten treatments were comprising of T1 - Zn0Fe0, T2 - Zn0Fe50, T3 - Zn0.5Fe50, T4 - Zn1.0Fe50, T5 - Zn1.5Fe50, T6 - Zn25Fe0, T7 - Zn25Fe0.5, T8 - Zn25Fe1.0, T9 - Zn25Fe1.5, T10 - Zn25Fe50.

    EFFECT OF SALINE WATER ON GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF GREEN GRAM (Vigna radiata L.) VARIETIES

    A pot experiment entitled “Effect of saline water on growth, yield and quality of green gram (Vigna radiata L.) varieties” was carried out during summer season of 2017 in the net house of Micronutrient Research Project (ICAR), Anand Agricultural University, Anand (Gujarat). The experiment was laid out in Factorial Completely Randomized Design with four repetitions. Varying five salt concentrations viz., S0 (ECiw 0.9 dS m-1,Tap water); S1 (ECiw 1.0 dS m-1); S2 (ECiw 2.0 dS m-1); S3 (ECiw 4.0 dS m-1); S4 (ECiw 6.0 dS m-1) and two green gram varieties viz. Meha and GAM 5 were selected in the experiment. The artificially salinized water was used with five different levels viz. 0.9 (tap water), 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 6.0 dS m-1 by using the salts of NaCl, CaCl2, MgCl2, NaHCO3, Na2SO4 and CaCO3 by mixing it with R.O. water (0.01 dS m-1). The effect of salt concentrations on germination (7 DAS), plant height at 30, 45 DAS and at harvest, proline content at 15 DAS, protein content of grain, nutrient composition viz. N, P, K, S, Na, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu in grain and stover and EC, pH, N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Na, OC, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu in soil after harvesting of green gram were studied.
