Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is an important non-food narcotic cash crop and a member of Solanaceae family. The present investigation on tobacco comprised of a half-diallel set of 8 parents and their 28 hybrids. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with 3 replications at Bidi Tobacco Research Station (BTRS), Anand Agricultural University, Anand, during kharif season 2006-07. Heterosis and combining ability analysis were carried out for 13 characters viz; days to flower, number of leaves per plant, plant height, number of branches per plant, khakhri yield, number of capsules per plant, days to capsule maturity, test weight, seed yield, capsule weight, seed weight per capsule, seed oil percent and seed oil yield

" Genetic variability and stability analysis of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) under in vitro conditions
(Anand Agricultural University, Anand, 2008) Patel Tanmay K.; Dr. K. B. Kathiria
Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench.) is an important vegetable crop and a highly polymorphic species of family Malvaceae. The present study, undertaken at Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory, Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, Anand Agricultural University, Anand, during year 2004-2008 describes in vitro studies on the effect of different genotypes, explants and phytohormones for callusing and somatic embryogenesis via callus using cotyledon and hypocotyl explants from ten different genotypes of okra. Attempts were also made to study the genetic variability, genotypic x environmental interaction, stability analysis for in vitro characters and biochemical aspects during the course of somatic embryogenesis

(Anand Agricultural University, Anand, 2008) SHETE JAYDEEP MACHCHINDRA; Dr. D. B. PATEL
The present investigation entitled ″Combining Ability Studies in Top Cross Derivatives of Maize (Zea mays L.)″ was undertaken at the Agronomy farm, B. A. College of Agriculture, Anand Agricultural University, Anand during rabi season 2007-08. The experimental material comprised of 22 parents, 21 F1 hybrids and 1 standard check variety viz., Narmada Moti. 44 were grown in a randomized block design with 3 replications. Heterosis, general combining ability, heritability, parent offsprings correlation

“LINE X TESTER ANALYSIS USING CMS SYSTEM IN RICE (Oryza sativa L.)”
(Anand Agricultural University, Anand, 2009) THAKARE INDRAPRATAP SUBHASH; Dr. A. M. Mehta
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the world’s most important staple cereal food crop growing in at least 114 countries under diverse conditions. As population growth continues to boost demand for rice, production growth in all the ecosystems is approaching a plateau. Therefore, efforts to enhance rice productivity must receive top priority. In this regards, heterosis breeding approach is the most viable option, to increase varietal yields to the tune of 15 to 20 %.

DIALLEL ANALYSIS FOR FRUIT YIELD AND ITS COMPONENT TRAITS IN MILD PUNGENT CHILLI (Capsicum annuum L.)
(Anand Agricultural University, Anand, 2008) PATEL ANILKUMAR LALJIBHAI; Dr. K. B. Kathiria
Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is an important vegetable and condiment crop having immense commercial and therapeutic value. It is mostly used as powder of dry red fruits in food preparations. Green fruits are used as vegetable purpose and dry fruits used in spice. Chilli is also used in food processing industry for pickle and sauce making. Thus, chilli has become indispensable condiment of every Indian home. Chilli fruits contain high amounts of carotene (provitamin A) and vitamins C (ascorbic acid), E, B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), and B3 (niacin). Higher intake of carotene may reduce the risk of cancer (Ziegler et al., 1986). Hartwell (1971) listed 14 references where chilli has been cited as a therapeutic agent for cancer. Chilli also has tonic and carminative action. It is also used in preparation of ginger beer and other beverages products.

HETEROSIS AND COMBINING ABILITY STUDIES IN CASTOR [Ricinus communis (L.)]
(Anand Agricultural University, Anand, 2008) BARAD YOGENDRAKUMAR MULUBHAI; DR. A. R. PATHAK
An experimental material comprised of five females (pistillate lines), eight males (testers) and their 40 hybrids developed through line x tester mating design were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications at Regional Research Station, Anand Agricultural University, Anand during kharif 2007-08. The objectives of this investigation were to study the performance of parents and hybrids, magnitude of heterosis and their combining ability.

EFFECT OF ALIEN CYTOPLASMS ON EXPRESSION OF HETEROSIS IN BIDI TOBACCO (Nicotiana tabacum L.) AND THEIR MOLECULAR DELINEATION THROUGH RAPD MARKERS
(Anand Agricultural University, 2008) KHISTARIA JAYESH MALDEBHAI; Dr. R. S. Fougat
Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) belongs to Solanaceae family. It is a principal cash crop of India, earning a large share of the excise revenue and giving employment to large number of people. Therefore, concerted efforts are needed to genetically enhance this crop for various qualitative and quantitative traits. As a small step in this direction, an experimental material comprising of twelve females consisting of four bidi tobacco varieties each with three cytoplasmic sources from allied species viz., N. megalosiphon, N. undulate and N. tabacum and four males (testers) was used in the study. The females were crossed with the pollinators in a line x tester mating design. The resulting 48 hybrids along with 16
