Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

    The present study was undertaken to analysed price behaviour and market integration of onion in Gujarat. It seeks to ascertain the optimum period for farmers to sale their produce, for the consumers to buy their goods and for the Government to take necessary policy decisions with regard to price support, procurement, storage and helping authorities to take up timely action. Thus, the analytical results of time series data related to prices and arrivals of onion in regulated markets of Gujarat is more useful as market intelligence for farmers, traders, exporters and policy makers. The present study was based on the secondary time series data on various aspects. Total eight regulated markets were selected purposively based on maximum arrivals of onion in the markets. The markets covered under the study were Mahuva (Station road), Ahmedabad (Chimanlal Patel market Vasana), Bhavnagar, Gondal, Vadodara (Sayajipura), Rajkot, Surat and Bharuch market.The secondary data on monthly wholesale prices and arrivals was collected from the website of www.agmarknet.gov.in of selected regulated markets for last ten years (2007 to 2016).For analysis of data several analytical tools were used viz., Compound Growth Rate, Instability Index, Inter year and Intra year price indices, correlation coefficient and Johansen co-integaration approach.

    AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF PRODUCTION AND MARKETING OF CABBAGE (Brassica oleraceae var. Capitata L) IN NORTH GUJARAT

    The present investigation was undertaken with a view to study cost and returns, resource use efficiency, marketing cost, margin and price spread as well as constraints in production and marketing of cabbage crop in North Gujarat by using multistage random sampling design. The study covered 4 talukas, 12 villages and 120 cabbage cultivators (43 marginal, 39 small, 21 medium and 17 large) from Banaskantha and Sabarkantha districts. For studying marketing, 5 functionaries from each category of cabbage marketing were randomly selected from Palanpur and Ahmedabad markets. The major analytical tools employed for the study were tabular analysis, cost concept (Cost A, Cost B, Cost C1 and Cost C2) and production function analysis (using SPSS software).

    Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is commonly known as Gram or Bengal gram, and is one of the important pulse crops of India. In 2016-17. It was grown on about 95.39 lakh hectare area and contributed 40 percent to total pulse production in the country. The major gram growing Indian states are Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, and Orissa. In Gujarat, the crop is mainly cultivated in Saurashtra region, Saurashtra region contributes 45-50 percent to the total chickpea production in Gujarat.

    Horticulture sector has emerged as major driver of growth in the agricultural and allied sector. Horticulture production are more remunerative as well having export value, hence area under horticulture crops are rapidly increasing in the state. Spices among major segment of horticultural production having major contribution in export value of the state although it having very less area compare to fruits and vegetables. India has monopoly in spices production and exports since long not in term of quantity only but in terms of different types of spices, too. Taking in the consideration of Gujarat based on various types of spices and their suitability to climate, Gujarat is known as “Seed Spices Hub” in the country. With combination of nature’s favour, farmers enthusiasm and policy instrument, Gujarat state is blooming in horticulture sector with consisting performance in seed spices.

The study covered 4 talukas, 12 villages and 120 maize growers from Dahod and Panchmahal districts. For studying price spread in marketing, five functionaries from each category of maize market were randomly selected from Dahod and Panchmahal markets. The major analytical tools employed for the study were tabular analysis, cost concept, price spread and linear regression function
