    COMPARISON OF XYLAZINE AND DEXMEDETOMIDINE AS PREANESTHETICS FOR KETAMINE ANESTHESIA IN VASECTOMY OF LEOPARDS (Panthera pardus fusca)

    The study was undertaken to compare Xylazine and Dexmedetomidine as preanesthetics for ketamine anesthesia to conduct vasectomy in twelve male captive Indian leopards (Panthera pardus fusca) housed at Tiger and Lion Safari, Shivamogga and Atal Bihari Vajpayee Zoological Gardens, Hospete as a birth control measure of captive populations under general anesthesia. The leopards were randomly divided into two groups of six each. Group A Leopards were immobilized with Xylazine (2mg/kg) and Ketamine (5 mg/kg) and Group B Leopards were immobilized with Dexmedetomidine (0.025 mg/kg) and Ketamine (5 mg/kg) delivered intramuscularly by a hand-held syringe in a squeeze cage. In Group A, the induction time was 14 ± 1.1 minutes with a range of 14-26 minutes and in Group B animals the induction time was 7.33 ± 0.12 minutes with a range of 07-12 minutes. Anesthetic induction and recovery were smooth and more predictable with good muscle relaxation in Group B individuals. Duration of anesthesia was longer (57 ± 2.24 minutes) with recovery time of (49-67 minutes) in Group A as compared to Group B where the duration of anesthesia was shorter (47.67 ± 1.06 minutes) with a shorter recovery time of (39-46 minutes) without any adverse effects of salivation, retching and vomitions during induction and recovery period which was noticed in Group A Leopards. Hematological and biochemical parameters were found to be in normal physiological limits without any significance in the groups. In conclusion, DexK combination was found to be superior as compared to the XK because of its faster and smoother induction, longer maintenance period and absence of adverse effects.
