    STOCK STRUCTURE ANALYSIS OF SIGANUS CANALICULATUS (PARK, 1797) ALONG SOUTH WEST AND SOUTH EAST COAST OF INDIA USING TRUSS ANALYSIS AND DNA BARCODING

    The Modern fisheries management is moving towards a precautionary approach of ensuring sustainable utilisation of marine resources. Determination of the population structure of exploited species is an essential component in the successful management of fisheries. In the present study an attempt was made to investigate the stock structure of Siganus Canaliculatus across the Indian coast using Truss Analysis and DNA barcoding. The study was based on 13 landmarks and 28 truss distances covering the entire fish. A few truss distances loaded heavily on PC1 (5- 11, 5-12, 6-11,5-10, 4-12, 4-13, 4-11, 3-13, 5-6, 10-11) which alone explained more than 37% of the variance. PC 2 explained more than 14% of the total varaiation and four distant variables (6-9, 7-10, 9-10, 6-7) corresponded to the caudal peduncle region of the fish which loaded heavily in this component. The PC 1 and PC 2 comprises of posterior abdomen and the caudal peduncle region of the fish fish, which were all found to be positive,thus signifying a positive correlation. The Discriminant analysis showed 15 out of 28 variables to be effectively discriminated in the different populations. The predicted group membership showed 8.3% of Vizag populations mixing with Mandapam, 1.7% of Mangalore populations mixing with Mandapam, 0.7, 4.9, 3.3% of Vizhinjam populations mixing with Mandapam, Mangalore and Vizhinjam respectively.The results of scatter plot and cluster analysis confirms different stocks of Siganus Canaliculatus found across the Indian coast. Further studies on mitochondrial markers can confirm the genetic difference between these existing stocks
