PREVALENCE OF OVINE BRUCELLOSIS IN BIDAR DISTRICT
(KARNATAKA VETERINARY, ANIMAL AND FISHERIES SCIENCES UNIVERSITY, BIDAR, 2023) ABHISHEK B VADIGERI; M. K. TANDLE)
The present study entitled “Prevalence of ovine brucellosis in Bidar district” was conducted during September 2022 to January 2023 to determine the prevalence of brucellosis in sheep by using different serological tests viz., RBPT, STAT and i-ELISA, comparative evaluation of the above mentioned serological tests and to know the zoonotic importance of brucellosis. A total of 225 sheep serum samples were screened using RBPT, STAT and i-ELISA to diagnose the Brucella-specific antibodies and 14.7 per cent, 16.4 per cent and 31.1 per cent were the prevalence rates respectively. Prevalence was higher in sheep of age group 2.1-4 years (33.3%) followed by 0-2 years (29.2%) and >4 years (27.3%). Rams (41.7%) were highly affected when compared to ewes (29.1%). Female sheep with a history of reproductive disorders had a higher prevalence of 64.9 per cent than sheep without a history of reproductive disorders (20.4%). The sensitivity and specificity of RBPT and STAT were 47.1 per cent and 100 per cent; 52.9 per cent and 100 per cent respectively. A total of 21 blood samples were collected from animal attendants and screened by RBPT, STAT and IgG ELISA and found 9.5 per cent, 4.8 per cent and 38.1 per cent prevalence respectively and none of the samples were positive with IgM ELISA. In conclusion, i-ELISA test is a more accurate and sensitive diagnostic tool than other tests for the diagnosis of ovine brucellosis.
