Shrimp culture is one of the major aquaculture practices in the world today. In less than 30 years, penaeid shrimp culture in the world developed from experimental beginnings Into a major industry providing hundreds of thousands of jobs, billions of US dollars in revenue and augmented the worldâ s food supply with the high value crop. Global shrimp production has registered a significant growth in the last two decades. It rose from 1.7 million tones (mt) in 1980 to 3.5 mt by 1999. Shrimp production increased by 125% and trade turn over registered an increase of 200-300% during the last two decade (Anon., 2001). The overall export of marine products has reached an ever time record of 1.6 billon US$ during the year 2005-2006(Anon 2006). Total marine exports of India aggregated to 512164 mt valued at Rs 7245.30 crore. Frozen shrimp with 59.02% of the total value continued to be the largest item exported.
