Rapid growth of human population and low protein intake are some of the major problems facing developing country like India. Poultry offers an avenue for rapid transformation in animal protein production as their population is highest among domesticated animal species. There is hardly any household in rural and peri urban area that does not keep one form of poultry or other. The genetic improvement could be attained at a faster rate in poultry due to a shorter generation interval compared to other farm animals. Poultry population of India was estimated to a 489 millions, while in Karnataka it is 25.6 millions (Dairy Year Book 2006).
