    Clinical Study on Induction of Parturition in Female Dogs

    A clinical study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of mifepristone alone or its combination with PGF2α for initiation of labor in bitches which had completed at least 65 days of pregnancy on the basis of mating dates. Mifepristone was administered at a dose of 5 mg/kg BW orally twice daily until the initiation of labor or for a maximum of four doses in six bitches. Six other animals received natural PGF2α at 0.1 mg/kg BW twice daily subcutaneously in addition to mifepristone. The mean time taken for the expulsion of the first pup, the mean time taken for the expulsion of the entire litter and the puppy survival rate in the two treated groups was compared with a group of 6 other animals which did not receive any treatment. Treatment with mifepristone alone or in combination with PGF2α effectively initiated parturition in over 80% of the treated animals. The time taken for the expulsion of the first pup and the time taken for the expulsion of the entire litter in the treated animals was significantly shorter than the control group. The puppy survival rate was highest in animals receiving a combined therapy of mifepristone and PGF2α. It is concluded that initiation of parturition is best carried out using a combination of mifepristone and PGF2α.
