    Poultry keeping in India about four and half decades ago was a backyard venture without systematic approach in management of birds for commercial egg and meat production. The total egg production in the country has increased from 2340 million eggs in the year 1961, to about 40,000 million eggs in the year 2004. Thus, in th four decades, a tremendous increase in egg production was achieved. India ranked 4 in egg production and 6* in broiler production in the world (Anonymous, 2005). In spite of such a tremendous potential for increased eggs production, the per capita availability of egg in rural and urban areas is 3 and 170 eggs, respectively with an average of 38 eggs as against to 180 eggs recommended by ICMR.
