Water is essential for the survival of life. The demand for water is continuously increasing with the growth of population, industry and agriculture (Saxena & Srivastava, 2002; Ravinder et cd., 2005). Rising standards of living, growing populations, rapid industrialization, mining and waste disposal practices affect the availability and quality of water (Biswal et al., 2001; Sivagurunathan & Dhinakaran, 2006). According to the World Health Organization about 80% of all the diseases of human beings are caused by water. In our country 70% of our water is seriously polluted and 75 % of illness and 80% Of the child mortality is attributed to water pollution (Ravichandran et al., 2002). Therefore, water that is essential for drinking and various other purposes must be of good quality.
