SOME ECOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF THE CLAM BEDS IN GURPUR ESTUARY, DAKSHINA KANNADA
(Karnataka Veterinary Animal And Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, 2008) RAJ ANNA J., B.F.Sc
Estuaries are highly dynamic, a regular mixing of seawater with fresh water and forms an important buffer zone between the river and the sea. Estuary is defined as the tidal mouth of a river. An estuary is â a semi-enclosed coastal body of water which has a free connection with the open sea and within which the sea water is measurably diluted with fresh water, derived from land drainageâ ? (Prichard in 1967). Estuary forms an important habitat of the aquatic environment with unique properties. Although, these unique properties are common to all the estuaries in the world, each individual estuary retains some of its own special characteristics, which are determined by topography, tidal range and local climate conditions

MEIOFAUNA IN RELATION TO SEDIMENT CHARACTERISTICS IN MULKY ESTUARY, BAKSHINA KANNADA
(Karnataka Veterinary Animal And Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, 2009) SWETHA K. B., B. F. Sc
The organisms live in or on are occasionally associated with aquatic sediments, their mode of life is referred to as â benthosâ ?. This benthos constitute a major component in the estuarine as well as marine realm and play an important role in the ecology and food of many bottom feeding fin fishes and shellfishes (Parulekar et al., 1980). They were classified as meio, macro and microbenthos based on their size. McIntyre (1969) defines true meiobenthos as â a group of small metazoans passing 0.5 mm mesh, which by their size, number, generation time and adaptation can conveniently be considered separately from the larger members of the benthosâ ?.

LIMNOLOGY OF NETHRAVATHI RIVER AT THUMBE AND SARPADI VENTED DAMS OF DAKSHINA KAINNADA

Aquatic ecosystem is the most diverse ecosystem in the world. The life originated in the water and first organisms were also aquatic where water was the principal external as well as an internal medium of organisms. Thus water is the most vital raw material for the existence of all living organisms. Water covers about 71% of the earth of which more than 95% exists in gigantic oceans. A very less amount of water is contained in the rivers (0.00015%) and lakes (0.01%), which comprise the most valuable fresh water resources. Global aquatic ecosystems fall under two broad classes defined by salinity viz-freshwater ecosystem and the saltwater ecosystem. Freshwater ecosystems are inland waters that have low concentrations of salts (< 500 mg/1). The salt-water ecosystem has high concentration of salt content.
